Abstract Based on the hydrodynamic theory for stimulus transmission across dentine, it would be logical to conclude that teeth exhibiting the clinical symptoms referred to as dentine hypersensitivity should have dentinal tubules open at the root surface and patent to the pulp. With the exception of studies on cut dentine, there is little direct evidence to support this conclusion. In this study, caries‐free teeth with exposed cervical root areas scheduled for extraction which were classified as ...

Prior studies of mood and cognitive changes produced by ACTH and glucocorticoids have not characterized accurately the incidence or time of onset of these changes. In this study mood and cognitive reactions of fifteen medical patients treated with ACTH or prednisone were studied prospectively. ACTH produced a lessening of dysphoria by the third treatment day, and mild euphoric reactions occurred in three of seven of the patients treated. Prednisone produced a reduction of dysphoria by the seventh ...

Abstract Studies of extracted teeth have shown that teeth exhibiting dentine hypersensitivity have larger numbers of widened dentinal tubules at the dentine surface compared to non‐sensitive teeth. Many compounds used in the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity are thought to achieve therapeutic benefit by tubule occlusion, but there has been almost no attempt to prove such action in vivo. These studies systematically determined whether the dentine surface could be evaluated non‐invasively. by ...

Summary Dentine hypersensitivity occurs when dentinal tubules are open on the dentine surface and patent to a vital pulp. There has been limited interest in the aetiology of dentine hypersensitivity. In particular, little is known about agents that remove the dentine smear layer to expose tubules. Toothbrushing certainly may expose dentine, but whether a toothbrush per se has the effect of opening tubules has not been established. The aim of this study in vitro was to determine whether a toothbrush ...

Repeated cocaine exposure and withdrawal leads to long-term changes, including behavioral and dopamine sensitization to an acute cocaine challenge, that are most pronounced after long withdrawal periods. However, the changes in dopamine neurotransmission after short withdrawal periods are less well defined. To study dopamine neurotransmission after 1-day withdrawal, we used fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) to determine whether repeated cocaine alters rapid dopamine release and uptake in the nucleus ...

Significance In this study, we have designed and experimentally validated, to our knowledge, the first perfectly symmetrical β-propeller protein. Our results provide insight not only into protein evolution through duplication events, but also into methods for creating designer proteins that self-assemble according to simple arithmetical rules. Such proteins may have very wide uses in bionanotechnology. Furthermore our design approach is both rapid and applicable to many different protein templates. ...

Summary Toothpastes are commonly used in the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity. One mode of action could be to block patent dentinal tubules with toothpaste ingredients or by abrasion to form a smear layer. Studies in vitro have shown that tooth‐paste abrasives have variable affinity for the dentine surface but retention may be limited. This SEM study extended previous work and determined the uptake in vitro of toothpaste ingredients onto the dentine surface and their retention when challenged ...

β-Propeller proteins form one of the largest families of protein structures, with a pseudo-symmetrical fold made up of subdomains called blades. They are not only abundant but are also involved in a wide variety of cellular processes, often by acting as a platform for the assembly of protein complexes. WD40 proteins are a subfamily of propeller proteins with no intrinsic enzymatic activity, but their stable, modular architecture and versatile surface have allowed evolution to adapt them to many ...

The glutamatergic system is thought to contribute to the motor disturbances observed in Parkinson's disease. Blockade of glutamatergic activity by a selective antagonist of the NR2B subunit of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor is associated with improvement in motor symptoms in a preclinical model of Parkinson's disease. A randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, placebo-controlled, 3-period crossover study was conducted in patients with moderate Parkinson's disease to evaluate the pharmacologic ...

Exposed dentine may be sensitive to stimuli depending on the patency of the dentinal tubules. Most abrasive elements tend to produce a smear layer which obturates the dentinal tubules. This layer is easily removed by a number of erosive agents, particularly dietary acids. Mouthwashes are increasingly used and largely investigated for possible benefits to dental health. Rarely do studies assess potential detrimental activity. The aim of the present study was to examine effects of mouthwashes on dentine. ...

The effect of microalgae on plant growth and nutrient removal was assessed for three vegetables (arugula, purple kohlrabi and lettuce) grown entirely using nitrate-rich synthetic wastewater in greenhouse hydroponics. Results showed that the response of the vegetables to microalgae varied. Microalgae had a negative effect on arugula growth, but in the purple kohlrabi and lettuce groups, there were no negative effects or even an increase in vegetable production. The dissolved oxygen (DO) and microalgae ...

Abstract Evidence indicates that teeth exhibiting cervical dentine hypersensitivity have open dentine tubules at the dentine surface. The identification of factors which render dentine exposed and tubules open is important both to the prevention and management of dentine hypersensitivity. In this study, recently extracted teeth were root planed or burred to expose the root dentine. Specimens were horizontally sectioned and then using the apical portion as control, the coronal portions placed in ...

This paper presents results of a population-based case-control study of the association between maternal exposures to environmental sulfur dioxide and total suspended particulates (TSP) and risk for having a very low birth weight (VLBW) baby, i.e., one weighing less than 1,500 g at birth. The study, which took place between April 1, 1986 and March 30, 1988, comprised 143 mothers of VLBW babies and 202 mothers of babies weighing 2,500 g or more living in Georgia Health Care District 9. The configuration mixing (CM) model is applied to the building of a simple reaction profile for nucleophilic addition to a carbonyl group. The analysis leads us to conclude that essentially all the so-called polar reaction pathways in organic chemistry are single-electron shift processes and intimately related to the class of electron transfer (ET) reactions. The implication of this finding to a variety of organic reactions, including oxidation-reduction of the NADH/NAD+ coenzyme couple, is discussed.
