A bloom of the diatom Rhizosolenia debyana H. Peragallo was observed in the southwestern Gulf of California. This bloom was estimated to be about 22 km long and represents the first record of this species for the area. Total abundance of R. debyana ranged from 2,576,000 to 3,684,000 cells liter-1. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from 17.15 to 41.45 mg/m3. Rhizosolenia debyana has a tropical and subtropical distribution.

Diet of juvenile (10Ð100 mm in length) abalone (Haliotis fulgens and H. corrugata) in their natural environment was examined in specimens collected at Bahía Tortugas, Baja California Sur. Nine macroalgae species, one polychaete worm, one amphipod, one hydrozoan, and one sea grass were identified. A high percentage of stomachs analyzed were empty. Parasitic dinoflagellates of the genus Amoebophrya commonly infect free-living toxic, and non-toxic dinoflagellates species which may cause harmful red tides. ABSTRACT Samples of epiphytic diatom assemblages found on prop roots of red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) from four sites were collected at two tidal levels of exposure on two different dates from the cool season (autumn, spring). The overall floristic analysis yielded 171 diatom taxa, including 16 new records for the Baja California peninsula. Abstract The gut contents of Haliotis rufescens postlarvae that had grazed on a diatom film grown in PVC buckets were analyzed to determine selectivity in feeding. Species composition and abundances were compared to that of the surrounding film. The first floristic inventory of benthic diatoms is provided for the Bahia Magdalena-Bahia Almejas lagoon system. Samplings were carried out during November of 1999. The oxydized samples were mounted permanently.
