Abstract The role of marine lipids as modulators of ruminal biohydrogenation of dietary unsaturated fatty acids may be explained by the effects of their n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on the bacterial community. However, the impact of individual PUFA has barely been examined, and it is uncertain which bacteria are truly involved in biohydrogenation. In addition, despite interspecies differences in rumen bacterial composition, we are not aware of any direct comparison of bovine and ovine responses ...

A temperature sensor based on overlay on side-polished fibers is presented. It works on the basis of the evanescent field coupling between a single-mode side-polished optical fiber and a dielectric waveguide overlay. The spectrum of a white light beam transmitted through the former system exhibit sharp and deep regularly spaced resonances whose central wavelenths are linearly shifted with temperature. It has a wavelength sensitivity of /spl sim/1 nm//spl deg/C, which is one order of magnitude better ...

Highly photoconductive properties are reported for organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel thin film materials composed of a classical poly(vinylcarbazole)/2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (PVK/TNF) polymeric mixture, entrapped in a SiO(2) matrix, whose pores have been chemically modified by organic functional groups. The highest photosensitivity obtained, 3.4 x 10(-10) cm Omega(-1) W(-1) at E 22 V microm(-)1, at the optimum molar ratio between the active components, TNF, PVK, and SiO(2), is in the range of ...

Milk fat depression (MFD) caused by trans-10,cis-12 18:2 is known to be mediated in cows and ewes by downregulation of mammary lipogenic genes. However, transcriptional mechanisms underlying marine lipid-induced MFD have not been well defined yet and the few available studies in ovine are not consistent. This trial was conducted to directly compare changes in animal performance, milk fatty acid composition, and particularly mammary mRNA abundance of candidate lipogenic genes and transcription factors ...

A kinetic model for the elemental sulfur and sulfate production from the autotrophic sulfide oxidation has been proposed. It is based on two kinetic equations able to describe the simultaneous microbial consumption of oxygen and sulfide (OUR and SUR) as a function of a particular sulfide-oxidizing microorganism or its physiological state, these can be characterized by the assessment of their kinetic constants. The respirometric technique allowed to estimate the dynamic experimental OUR and SUR profiles, ...

Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) has shown to benefit older patients undergoing urological and orthopedic surgery. However, this approach has been scarcely assessed in patients elected for colorectal surgery.Retrospective cohort of patients aged ≥70 years admitted for elective colorectal cancer surgery to a single hospital between 2008 and 2012. Upon admission, patients were assigned to a usual care (UC) plan or a CGA-based care (GS) plan conducted by a multidisciplinary team, according to standard ...

Background: Malnutrition increases worse outcomes during hospital admission for elective colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery in older adults. Methods: This work was designed an observational, monocentric, case-control study nested in a cohort of patients undergoing elective surgery for CRC disease at the Hospital Universitario de la Ribera (HULR) (Alzira, Valencia, Spain) between 2011 and 2019. The study considered patients with a CONUT score in the range of moderate to severe malnutrition (>4 points), with ...

We present the first polymorph interconversion study that uses solid-state dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC). This system exhibits unexpected and rich behavior, including the observation that under appropriate conditions the polymorph interconversion of a heterodimer proceeds through reversible covalent chemistry intermediates, and this route is facilitated by one of the two disulfide homodimers involved in the reaction. Furthermore, we demonstrate experimentally that in all cases a dynamic equilibrium ...

We report the correction of the shrinkage observed during UV postrecording curing in a holographic solgel material that was recently achieved by the use of various chemical formulations for the composition of the hybrid supporting matrix. We found that a chemical modification of the matrix noticeably attenuates the shrinkage (from 1.3% to 0.4% of the material's initial thickness with the inclusion of just 20% tetramethylorthosilicate), providing a material with improved stability for permanent data ...

The composition of the holographic and photorefractive materials prepared through the sol-gel approach are completely based on their respective multi-functional polymer analogues, but in the polymer acting as host matrix which is replaced by a nanoporous silica matrix. Such a replacement infers an overall improvement in both ...

Abstract: Hip fractures are a very serious socio-economic problem in western countries. Since the 1950s, orthogeriatric units have introduced improvements in the care of geriatric patients admitted to hospital because of hip fractures. During this period, these units have reduced mean hospital stays, number of complications, and both in-hospital mortality and mortality over the middle term after hospital discharge, along with improvements in the quality of care and a reduction in costs. Likewise, ...

The present study evaluates the technical and economical feasibility of the H2S elimination from an energy-rich gas using a full-scale biotrickling filter installed in a municipal waste water treatment plant. The study analyzes the continuous operation of a 4.5 months period, treating 80 m3 h-1 of biogas with an average H2S concentration of 3000 ppmv. The bioreactor was operated at a gas contact time of 180 seconds and maximum elimination capacities of 170 g H2S m-3 h-1 were obtained without any ...

Both low-spatial-frequency (54 line pairs/mm(-1)) and high-spatial-frequency (1400 line pairs/mm(-1)) holographic gratings were successfully recorded in the medium by interference of two coherent beams of 351.1-nm wavelength. High diffraction efficiencies (93%) and extremely low absorption and scattering coefficients were measured during the holographic reconstruction by a 632.8-nm He-Ne beam. ...

Intoxication of grazing cattle occurs repeatedly when they consume large amounts of young oak leaves (OL), which are rich in hydrolysable tannins (HT), due to a shortage of other feed resources. The HT are antimicrobial, although some rumen bacteria can resist or degrade them into potentially toxic or harmless metabolites. To study the effect of the administration of HT-rich OL (Quercus pyrenaica) after a severe feed restriction on the rumen bacterial community and monitor the variations in some bacterial ...

Oxalic acid (OA) is a secondary compound occurring in a wide range of plants consumed by ruminants, especially in saline lands or in arid and semi-arid regions. However, its impact on the rumen microbial community and its changes over time, as well as the potential consequences on ruminal function, remain unknown. To examine this impact, five ewes fitted with a ruminal cannula and fed low-quality grass hay were dosed daily with 0.6 mmol of OA/kg body weight through the cannula for 14 days. On days ...

The modulation of milk fat nutritional quality through fish oil supplementation seems to be largely explained by the action of n-3 very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on ruminal biohydrogenation (BH) of C18 fatty acids (FA). Abstract Proteostatic regulation of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate‐limiting enzyme in dopamine biosynthesis, is crucial for maintaining proper brain neurotransmitter homeostasis. Variants of the TH gene are associated with tyrosine hydroxylase deficiency (THD), a rare disorder with a wide phenotypic spectrum and variable response to treatment, which affects protein stability and may lead to accelerated degradation, loss of TH function and catecholamine deficiency. In this study, we investigated ...
