The development of Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis (EAE), an auto-immune disease directed against the central nervous system, causes a marked increase of serum contained alpha globulins. Serum with elevated alpha globulins decreases the uptake of 3H-thymidine into mitogen stimulated normal or immune lymphocytes. The increased alpha globulin levels and immunosuppressive activity parallel the development of clinical signs.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Despite its importance, treatment methods are limited and restricted to symptomatic care, highlighting the urgent need for new treatment options. Tissue damage in COPD is thought to result from an inability of the normal repair processes with accumulation of apoptotic material and impaired clearance of this material by macrophages in the airways. Lung inflammation involves the bioactive sphingolipid sphingosine 1- ...

Abstract Nuclear clearance of the DNA/RNA-binding protein TDP-43 is a pathologic hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia that remains unexplained. Moreover, our current understanding of TDP-43 nucleocytoplasmic shuttling does not fully explain the predominantly nuclear localization of TDP-43 in healthy cells. Here, we used permeabilized and live-cell models to investigate TDP-43 nuclear export and the role of RNA in TDP-43 localization. We show that TDP-43 nuclear efflux occurs ...

China has been building at least 50 gigawatt (GW) of new coal-fired power plants every year since 2004. In the absence of CO2 capture ready (CCR) designs, a large fraction of new coal power plants built in the next decade could face 'carbon lock-in'. Building on the existing engineering and economic literature on CO2 capture ready, the aim of this study is to understand the opportunities and challenges in implementing CCR in China. In early 2010, opinion-leaders perceptions towards implementing CCR ...

This report compares the use of the lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH) assay with 3H-hypoxanthine incorporation and Giemsa microscopy for the evaluation of anti-malaria drug inhibition of the growth of P. falciparum in vitro. The inhibition profiles and IC50 determinations of the pLDH assay were directly comparable to those determined by the radioactive uptake and microscopic methods. Furthermore, the pLDH culture sensitivity assay is reproducible, easily interpreted, rapid and inexpensive to perform, ...

Synopsis Contrary to previous hydrogeological assumptions, we now know that drift deposits and fracture systems in crystalline rocks can constitute important aquifers in the Scottish Highlands and other montane environments. Groundwater from these aquifers usually has an important influence on the hydrology, hydrochemistry and ecology of upland river systems. Tracer-based research in the Girnock burn catchment in the Cairngorms revealed that groundwater comprises at least 30% of annual runoff. Groundwater ...

Introduction If maritime archaeology, ‘the scientific study of the material remains of man and his activities on the sea’ (Muckelroy 1978: 4), is to be regarded usefully as a subdiscipline, then a major unifying factor must be the existence of common methodologies applicable to the study of shipwrecks irrespective of their date and location. The special conditions of work underwater are by themselves inadequate grounds for distinction, as has now long been recognized (Bass 1966). Instead it is in aspects ...
