The nutrient concentration of most crops depends on factors such as amount of water, growing environment, sunlight, and soil types. However, the factors influencing nutrient concentration of African horned cucumber fruit are not yet known. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of different water stress levels, soil types, and growing environments on the nutrient concentration of African horned cucumber fruit. Freeze-dried fruit samples were used in the quantification of β-carotene ...

The title compound, [{AlMe2(NHPri)}2], has been made from trimethylaluminium and isopropylamine. Crystals are triclinic with a= 858.6(3), b= 1 136.6(5), and c= 1 344.0(5) pm, α= 107.48(3), β= 90.52(2), γ= 99.21(3)° and Z= 3. The structure determination (diffractometer data, 2 388 reflections, R= 0.078) shows that molecules have four-membered (AIN)2 rings and that cis and trans isomers, mole ratio 2 : 1, crystallise together. Mean molecular parameters are: Al–N 195.2(9), Al–C 196.1(6), and N–C 149.7(8) ...

Economic deregulation of the Australian domestic aviation market came into force on 1 November 1990. One airline, Compass Airlines Pty Ltd, was prepared for entry well before this. Almost exactly one year on, with no other new entrants, Compass ceased operations. The debate on this event aroused intense public interest and there has been concern by some that this spelt the end of economic deregulation, with a return to higher fares. This paper presents and analyses the evidence and arguments about ...

Enteric infections early in life have been associated with poor linear growth among children in low-resource settings. Point-of-use water treatment technologies provide effective and low-cost solutions to reduce exposure to enteropathogens from drinking water, but it is unknown whether the use of these technologies translates to improvements in child growth. We conducted a community-based randomized controlled trial of two water treatment technologies to estimate their effects on child growth in ...

Tris(trimethylsilylmethyl)aluminium, made from bis(trimethylsilylmethyl)mercury and aluminium foil, is a colourless inflammable liquid, which appears to give a mixture of monomeric and dimeric species in benzene. It reacts with methylamine to yield the dimeric amido derivative [(Me3SiCH2)2AlNHMe]2.

Different supporting procedures were followed to alter the nanoparticle-support interactions (NPSI) in two Co3O4/Al2O3 catalysts, prepared using the reverse micelle technique. The catalysts were tested in the dry preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO-PrOx) while their phase stability was monitored using four complementary in situ techniques, viz., magnet-based characterization, PXRD, and combined XAS/DRIFTS, as well as quasi in situ XPS, respectively. The catalyst with weak NPSI achieved higher ...

Human gamma-D crystallin (HGD) is a major constituent of the eye lens. Aggregation of HGD contributes to cataract formation, the leading cause of blindness worldwide. It is unique in its longevity, maintaining its folded and soluble state for 50-60 years. One outstanding question is the structural basis of this longevity despite oxidative aging and environmental stressors including ultraviolet radiation (UV). Here we present crystallographic structures evidencing a UV-induced crystallin redox switch ...

Consumption of microbial-contaminated water can result in diarrheal illnesses and enteropathy with the heaviest impact upon children below the age of five. We aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of water quality in a low-resource setting in Limpopo province, South Africa. Two organoaluminium amides have been used to initiate the polymerizations of methyl methacrylate, acetaldehyde and n-butyraldehyde. Methyl methacrylate polymerized through the vinyl function to give amorphous products. The aldehydes reacted through the carbonyl group at low temperatures with high degrees of stereospecificity to give polymers with substantial crystallinity. The molecular weight of the polyacetaldehyde is very high.

In this study, we report on the prevalence of 19 virulence genes in enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) isolates from northern South Africa. Stool samples obtained prospectively from 97 children from 1 to 12 months of age were analyzed, and EAEC isolates were confirmed based on the presence of aaiC or aatA genes. We investigated 177 enteroaggregative Escherichia coli isolates for the prevalence of virulence genes using multiplex polymerase chain reaction. The chromosomal gene aaiC was detected ...

People with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia are three times more likely to smoke than the wider population, contributing to widening health inequalities. Smoking remains the largest modifiable risk factor for this health inequality, but people with severe mental illness have not historically engaged with smoking cessation services. Nature plays a crucial role in providing ecosystem services (ESs) essential for human wellbeing and biodiversity conservation in rural areas. However, existing paradigms often lack an integrative approach towards rural livelihoods and wellbeing, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between human wellbeing (HWB) and ESs. The area around the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA) offers such ESs to indigenous people who rely heavily on these natural ...

Background There is a high prevalence of smoking among people with severe mental ill health (SMI). Helping people with SMI to quit smoking could improve their health and longevity, and reduce health inequalities. The transformation of Africa does not only depend on knowledge generation but specifically management knowledge which is critical to business development, growth, and productivity. It is therefore important for African management scholars not only to generate knowledge but also to define their collective identity. That identity proffers legitimacy and other meaningful outcomes. Despite the increasing burden of dengue, the regional emergence of the virus in Kenya has not been examined. This study investigates the genetic structure and regional spread of dengue virus-2 in Kenya. Viral RNA from acutely ill patients in Kenya was enriched and sequenced. Six new dengue-2 genomes were combined with 349 publicly available genomes and phylogenies used to infer gene flow between Kenya and other countries. Analyses indicate two dengue-2 Cosmopolitan genotype lineages circulating ...

The first wave of COVID-19 in South Africa peaked in July, 2020, and a larger second wave peaked in January, 2021, in which the SARS-CoV-2 501Y.V2 (Beta) lineage predominated. We aimed to compare in-hospital mortality and other patient characteristics between the first and second waves. In this prospective cohort study, we analysed data from the DATCOV national active surveillance system for COVID-19 admissions to hospital from March 5, 2020, to March 27, 2021. The system contained data from all hospitals ...

Abstract Despite the increasing burden of dengue in Kenya and Africa, the introduction and expansion of the virus in the region remain poorly understood. The objective of this study is to examine the genetic diversity and evolutionary histories of dengue virus (DENV) serotypes 1 and 3 in Kenya and contextualize their circulation within circulation dynamics in the broader African region. Viral RNA was extracted from samples collected from a cohort of febrile patients recruited at clinical sites in ...

Abstract We characterized population pharmacokinetics in 42 African children receiving once-daily 25 mg (14 to <20 kg) or 50 mg (>20 kg) dolutegravir. Coadministration with emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide reduced dolutegravir bioavailability by 19.6% (95% confidence interval: 8.13%–30.8%) compared with zidovudine or abacavir with lamivudine. Nevertheless, concentrations remained above efficacy targets, confirming current dosing recommendations.

Background Giant cell arteritis is an age-related vasculitis that mainly affects the aorta and its branches in individuals aged 50 years and older.Current options for diagnosis and treatment are scarce, highlighting the need to better understand its underlying pathogenesis.Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have emerged as a powerful tool for unravelling the pathogenic mechanisms involved in complex diseases. We aimed to characterise the genetic basis of giant cell arteritis by performing the ...
