ABSTRACT Previous studies of the avian reovirus strain S1133 (ARV-S1133) S1 genome segment revealed that the open reading frame (ORF) encoding the ςC viral cell attachment protein initiates over 600 nucleotides distal from the 5′ end of the S1 mRNA and is preceded by two predicted small nonoverlapping ORFs. To more clearly define the translational properties of this unusual polycistronic RNA, we pursued a comparative analysis of the S1 genome segment of the related Nelson Bay reovirus (NBV). Among members of the genus Orthoreovirus, family Reoviridae, a group of non-enveloped viruses with genomes comprising ten segments of double-stranded RNA, only the “non-fusogenic” mammalian orthoreoviruses (MRVs) have been studied to date by electron cryomicroscopy and three-dimensional image reconstruction. In addition to MRVs, this genus comprises other species that induce syncytium formation in cultured cells, a property shared with members of the related genus Aquareovirus. To augment studies ...

David O’Hara, Megan K. Patrick, Denisa Cepica, Kevin M. Coombs, Roy Duncan,

ABSTRACT We determined that the highly pathogenic avian reovirus strain 176 (ARV-176) possesses an enhanced ability to establish productive infections in HD-11 avian macrophages compared to avian fibroblasts. Conversely, the weakly pathogenic strain ARV-138 shows no such macrophagotropic tendency. The macrophage infection capability of the two viruses did not reflect differences in the ability to either induce or inhibit nitric oxide production. Moderate increases in the ARV-138 multiplicity of infection ...

Ketamine and midazolam have been used safely by anaesthetists in paediatric burns and have a good safety profile. We believed that this could be developed to a nurse led conscious sedation protocol, without direct anaesthetic attendance. Two years experience of our technique was retrospectively reviewed. We recorded the age, weight, percentage burn, dose of oral ketamine and midazolam given, time for procedure whether an anaesthetist was called to the sedation room, and the reason for the call.Data ...

David B. O'Hara, J. Sidney Clements, W.C. Finney, Robert H. Davis,

The strong dependence of electrostatic precipitator efficiency on particle charge has initiated a number of investigations of charge enhancement techniques. Measurements of free electron charging of aerosol particles reported here for nitrogen and argon confirm the earlier evidence (DuBard et al., J. Aerosol Sci.14, 5, 1983) that free electron charging in nitrogen produced a substantially higher particle charge than charging by ions. The measured particle charge was 2–10 times larger for free electron ...

Summary Critical Incident Stress Debriefing is a recognised and necessary support system which has been provided for victims of significant disasters such as bomb‐blasts, violent crimes and kidnappings. Fatal road traffic accidents involving children are sadly increasing in frequency but it is rare for systematic counselling or support to be offered to the deceased child's peers, teachers and family. An educational psychology service outlines its experience of setting up a bereavement support service, ...

This article synthesizes the literature on self-determination across the lifespan with a focus on identifying gaps that exist between theory, research, and evidence-based practices. Using a life-stages approach, it first examines issues across life phases, and then examines cross-cutting topics (employment, abuse and neglect, and health) that are relevant during several age ranges. A lifespan approach to self-determination takes into account both the developmental stage and the social ecological ...
