Most humans become infected with Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), which then persists for life. Infrequently, EBV infection causes infectious mononucleosis (IM) or Burkitt lymphoma (BL). Type I EBV infection, particularly type I BL, stimulates strong responses of innate immune cells. Humans respond to EBV in two alternative ways. Of 24 individuals studied, 13 made strong NK and γδ T cell responses, whereas 11 made feeble γδ T cell responses but stronger NK cell responses. The difference does not correlate ...

The Antarctic Peninsula has experienced a dramatic increase in temperature and the loss of ca. 14,000 km2 of ice-shelf area in recent years. During this time George VI Ice Shelf (GVIIS) has remained relatively intact, but it is now reaching its theoretical limit of viability. Epishelf lakes, formed when ice shelves dam the mouths of marine embayments, accumulate sediments that can be used to constrain past ice-shelf behaviour. They are stratified water bodies with an upper layer of fresh meltwater ...

Abstract The use of genetically engineered cancer-prone mice as relevant surrogates for patients during the development of pertinent clinical applications is an unproven expectation that awaits direct demonstration. Despite the generally disappointing findings using tumor xenografts and certain early transgenic cancer models to predict therapeutic efficacy in patients, the dramatic progress of mouse models in recent years engenders optimism that the newest generation of mouse models will provide ...

Abstract The tumor suppressor gene p53 has an apparent role in breast tumor development in humans, as ∼30% of sporadic tumors acquire p53 mutations and Li-Fraumeni syndrome patients carrying germ line p53 mutations frequently develop breast tumors at early age. In the present study, conditional expression of a targeted mutation is used to analyze the role of the human R273H tumor-associated hotspot mutation in p53 in mammary gland tumorigenesis. Heterozygous p53R270H/+WAPCre mice (with mammary gland– ...

Abstract We report a direct comparison of the differential effects of individual p53 mutations on lung tumor growth and progression, and the creation of a murine model of spontaneous advanced lung adenocarcinoma that closely recapitulates several aspects of advanced human pulmonary adenocarcinoma. We generated compound conditional knock-in mice with mutations in K-ras combined with one of three p53 alleles: a contact mutant, a structural mutant, or a null allele. p53 loss strongly promoted the progression ...

The p53 tumor suppressor gene is commonly altered in human tumors, predominantly through missense mutations that result in accumulation of mutant p53 protein. These mutations may confer dominant-negative or gain-of-function properties to p53. To ascertain the physiological effects of p53 point mutation, the structural mutant p53R172H and the contact mutant p53R270H (codons 175 and 273 in humans) were engineered into the endogenous p53 locus in mice. p53R270H/+ and p53R172H/+ mice are models of Li- ...

Background Over the past decades, several viral diseases transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes—dengue, chikungunya, Zika—have spread outside of tropical areas. To limit the transmission of these viruses and preserve human health, the use of mosquito traps has been developed as a complement or alternative to other vector control techniques. The objective of this work was to perform a systematic review of the existing scientific literature to assess the efficacy of interventions based on adult mosquito ...

The aim of this study is to evaluate the long-term efficacy, safety, and impact on immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels of rituximab in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). A retrospective, observational study of drug-refractory MG patients treated with rituximab was done. The MG Foundation of America postintervention status (MGFA-PIS) was used to evaluate clinical response. Serum IgG levels were determined at baseline and post-treatment. Hypogammaglobulinemia was defined as IgG<7g/L. Thirty patients were ...
