From 2014 to 2020, we compiled radiocarbon ages from the lower 48 states, creating a database of more than 100,000 archaeological, geological, and paleontological ages that will be freely available to researchers through the Canadian Archaeological Radiocarbon Database. Here, we discuss the process used to compile ages, general characteristics of the database, and lessons learned from this exercise in “big data” compilation.

The feasibility of using floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) to treat runoff typical of commercial nurseries was investigated using two 8-week trials with replicated mesocosms. Plants were supported by Beemat rafts. Five monoculture treatments of Agrostis alba (red top), Canna × generalis 'Firebird' (canna lily), Carex stricta (tussock sedge), Iris ensata 'Rising Sun' (Japanese water iris), Panicum virgatum (switchgrass), two mixed species treatments, and an unplanted control were assessed. These plant species ...

Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) are an emerging surface water treatment practice for reducing nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in a variety of waste streams. FTWs consist of floating rafts which support wetland plants allowing the plant roots to be submerged below the water surface similar to hydroponic systems. N and P removal is achieved through direct plant uptake and flocculation or sedimentation facilitated by biofilms adhering to plant roots. While research has documented ...

This paper reviews the general problem of surgical scheduling. We organize the literature based on the time frame or planning horizon of the schedule into six categories: capacity planning, process reengineering/redesign, the surgical services portfolio, procedure duration estimation, schedule construction, and schedule execution, monitoring, and control. We survey past work and suggest topics for potential future research in each of those areas.

Abstract Eulachon ( Thaleichthys pacificus ), an anadromous smelt in the Northeast Pacific Ocean was examined for listing under the USA’s Endangered Species Act (ESA). A southern Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of eulachon – that occurs in the California Current and is composed of numerous subpopulations that spawn in rivers from northern California to northern British Columbia – was identified on the basis of ecological and environmental characteristics, and to a lesser extent, genetic and life history ...

One or more of three intense and persistent droughts impacted some Native American cultures in the early-11th, middle-12th and late-13th centuries, including the Anasazi, Fremont, Lovelock, and Mississippian (Cahokian) prehistorical cultures. Tree-ring-based reconstructions of precipitation and temperature indicate that warm drought periods occurred between AD 990 and 1060, AD 1135 and 1170, and AD 1276 and 1297. These droughts occurred during minima in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and may have ...

Cholera toxin (CT) activates expression of two immediate-early response genes (JE and TIS10) in quiescent BALB/c 3T3 cells. Increases in cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels in response to CT are likely responsible for the induction of TIS10 gene expression, since treatment with 8-Br-cAMP and increasing the intracellular levels of cAMP by treatment with forskolin induce TIS10 gene expression. In contrast, neither forskolin nor 8-Br-cAMP induces JE gene expression. 3-Isobutyl-1-methylxanthine, which stabilizes ...

The protein-tyrosine kinase (PTK) v-Fps induces protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent expression of the transformation-related 9E3 gene in chicken embryo fibroblasts (Spangler, R., Joseph, C., Qureshi, S.A., Berg, K., and Foster, D.A. (1989) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 86, 7017-7021). We present evidence here that a GTP-binding protein (G-protein) is a component of this PKC-dependent signaling pathway. 1) A GTP analogue that stimulates G-protein-mediated signals induced 9E3 gene expression. 2) A GDP analogue ...

We report the first structural study of the lowest triplet states of three α-dicarbonyls (glyoxal, methylglyoxal, and biacetyl) using the technique of laser-induced phosphorescence (LIP) spectroscopy in supersonic jets. At the level of vibrational resolution, 3Au glyoxal appears to have a geometry very similar to that of the ground state. But the T1←S0 transitions of methylglyoxal and biacetyl each exhibit strong progressions in the torsional vibrations of the methyl groups, showing that these molecules ...

A rotational analysis of three vibronic bands (000, 720, and 510) in the phosphorescence excitation spectrum of glyoxal (CHO–CHO) has been performed. From this analysis we deduce the rotational, spin-rotation, and spin–spin (plus spin-orbit) constants of the lowest triplet state of the isolated molecule. 3Au glyoxal has been shown to exist in nearly the same trans-planar (C2h) configuration as the lowest excited singlet state. Both geometries are very similar to that of the ground state. The dynamic ...

Abstract We have investigated the family of a 15‐year‐old proposita with a homozygous, receptor‐defective, familial hypercholesterolemia and found that her consanguineous, obligate heterozygous parents have “normal” cholesterol levels and a family history of unusual longevity. Documentation of paternity and the presence of the heterozygous biochemical disorder in the parents is firm. The implications are that, at least in this family, relatively low serum cholesterol and high levels of HDL cholesterol ...

Coherently prepared ‘‘single’’ rovibronic levels of electronically excited pyrazine typically exhibit a biexponential fluorescence decay whose preexponential factor ratio A+/A− is magnetic field dependent. Studies of this dependence for different J′ values show that complete spin decoupling from the molecular frame, leading to the intersystem crossing (ISC) selection rule ΔJ=0,±1, occurs at the anomalously low field of ∼100 G. The monoexponential decay of the J′=0 level is independent of the field. ...

Pyrazine (1,4‐diazabenzene) has played a central role in the development of the theory of radiationless transitions. In this paper, we will describe studies of the decay behavior and fluorescence quantum yield of the isolated molecule and several of its isotopically labelled derivatives following pulsed dye laser excitation of “single” rotational levels of the 1 B 3 u ( n π*) state in a seeded supersonic jet, both in the presence and absence of an external magnetic field. We shall demonstrate that pyrazine ...

Paraquat is known to produce hyperglycemia in rodents, although the mechanisms responsible for the hyperglycemic effect of paraquat are not clearly understood. In this study we report the effects of paraquat (25 mg/kg iv) on plasma glucose, cortisol, catecholamines, and insulin in dogs. Paraquat caused a significant increase in plasma glucose level at all times of measurement except at 0.5 hr following paraquat administration. The cortisol levels after paraquat treatment were increased to 133, 305, ...
