We report g, V, and r photometric time series of HD 149026 spanning predicted times of transit of the Saturn-mass planetary companion, which was recently discovered by Sato and collaborators. We present a joint analysis of our observations and the previously reported photometry and radial velocities of the central star. We refine the estimate of the transit ephemeris to Tc [HJD] = 2453527.87455^{+0.00085}_{-0.00091} + N * 2.87598^{+0.00012}_{-0.00017}. Assuming that the star has a radius of 1.45 +/- 0.10 R_ ...

Abstract We report the discovery and characterization of TOI-1759 b, a temperate (400 K) sub-Neptune-sized exoplanet orbiting the M dwarf TOI-1759 (TIC 408636441). TOI-1759 b was observed by TESS to transit in Sectors 16, 17, and 24, with only one transit observed per sector, creating an ambiguity regarding the orbital period of the planet candidate. Ground-based photometric observations, combined with radial-velocity measurements obtained with the CARMENES spectrograph, confirm an actual period of ...

Christopher D. Winn, David M. Karl,
The nucleic acid synthesis rates of several marine phytoplankton and bacteria grown in chemostat and batch cultures were measured by using [ 3 H]adenine. The [ 3 H]adenine synthesis rates showed excellent agreement with the known rates of synthesis estimated from chemical RNA and DNA data. Under certain conditions, RNA turnover and ATP pool compartmentalization produce inaccuracies in synthesis measurements made with [ 3 H]adenine. However, accurate measurements of the rates of microbial RNA and DNA synthesis ...

Kenneth H. Winn, David Brion Davis,
For more than twenty years David Brion Davis has been recognized as a leading authority on the moral and ideological responses to slavery in the Western world. From Homicide to Slavery, Davis's first book of collected essays, brings together selections reflecting his wide-ranging interests in colonial history, Afro-American history, the social sciences, and American literature. The essays are interconnected by Davis's central concern with violence, irrationality, and the definition of moral limits ...

Christopher D. Winn, David M. Karl,
The diel rate of microbial nucleic acid synthesis and the concentration of particulate DNA were measured at various locations in the oligotrophic Pacific Ocean. Net synthesis of RNA and DNA was observed over 24‐h periods at all locations investigated, but the actual rate sometimes varied with time of day. It is concluded that whenever possible, daily rates of synthesis should be determined from a series of consecutive incubations conducted over a complete 24‐h period. In addition, nonreplicating ...

An analysis is given for the configurationally averaged Green functions of a random multi-level tight-binding model characterised by quenched liquid-like disorder, using graph-theoretical methods. An exact self-consistency equation for the average diagonal Green function matrix, G(z), is derived, from which follow the partial densities of states (DOS). From the exact description, various approximate theories for G(z) may be developed systematically. The authors examine in particular three tractable ...

From an exact theory presented in a previous paper (see Logan and Winn, 1988), the authors develop systematically an approximate single-site description for the density of states of a random tight-binding model characterised by quenched liquid-like disorder. The resultant theory is formally equivalent to the single super-chain approximation (SSCA) introduced by Wertheim (1973) in the context of classical dielectric theory. The authors show that the SSCA is equivalent to the effective-medium approximation ( ...
