Professional education, including managerial accounting education, at independent colleges and universities faces two challenges: (a) meeting shifting demand with static or declining resources and (b) ensuring that graduates gain the technological knowledge and skills that they need to succeed in their future careers. For many schools, the decision to adopt distance learning in place of traditional classroom instruction has generated more problems than solutions; some distance learning programs have ...

Abstract Wheat germ agglutinin protein, which is able to agglutinate tumor cells better than normal cells, was covalently bound to polyacrylamide gel beads. The specific binding activity of the protein was preserved on these beads and was expressed heterogeneously by the binding of mouse leukemia cells (L1210) to the protein coupled gels. The selective activity of the immobilized protein was maximal when the number of sites available to covalently couple the protein was lowest. The application of ...

A comprehensive analysis of Staphylococcus aureus superantigen (SAG) genes was undertaken in isolates from a major hospital and compared with isolates from patients with toxic shock syndrome (TSS). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis included recently discovered SAGs. Staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) G and SEI were uniquely expressed in genital isolates. Genital isolates were similar to TSS isolates, although the latter frequently expressed TSS toxin 1. Both had a high frequency of SEG/SEI and a ...

Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of irreversible visual impairment in the developed world. Advanced age-related macular degeneration consists of geographic atrophy and choroidal neovascularization. The specific genetic variants that predispose patients to geographic atrophy are largely unknown. We tested for an association between the functional toll-like receptor 3 gene (TLR3) variant rs3775291 (involving the substitution of phenylalanine for leucine at amino acid 412) and ...

In spite of 50 years of extensive use of penicillin, group A streptococci remain exquisitely susceptible to this antibiotic. This observation that continuing susceptibility has occurred despite the development of resistance to other antimicrobial agents prompted a day-long meeting at Rockefeller University (New York) in October 1996. Among the most likely explanations for this remarkable state of continued susceptibility to penicillin are that beta-lactamase may not be expressed or may be toxic to ...

Type-1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease characterized by damage to pancreatic insulin-producing beta cells, is associated with adverse renal, retinal, cardiovascular, and cognitive outcomes, possibly including dementia. Moreover, the protozoal parasite Toxoplasma gondii has been associated with type-1 diabetes. To better characterize the association between type-1 diabetes and Toxoplasma gondii infection, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies that evaluated the relationship ...

Mutations in the BCR-ABL1 kinase domain are an established mechanism of tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) resistance in Philadelphia chromosome-positive leukemia, but fail to explain many cases of clinical TKI failure. In contrast, it is largely unknown why some patients fail TKI therapy despite continued suppression of BCR-ABL1 kinase activity, a situation termed BCR-ABL1 kinase-independent TKI resistance. Here, we identified activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) ...

Mefloquine is used for the prevention and treatment of chloroquine-resistant malaria, but its use is associated with nightmares, hallucinations, and exacerbation of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. We hypothesized that potential mechanisms of action for the adverse psychotropic effects of mefloquine resemble those of other known psychotomimetics. Using in vitro radioligand binding and functional assays, we examined the interaction of (+)- and (−)-mefloquine enantiomers, the non-psychotomimetic ...

All commercial influenza vaccines elicit antibody responses that protect against seasonal infection, but this approach is limited by the need for annual vaccine reformulation that precludes efficient responses against epidemic and pandemic disease. In this study we describe a novel vaccination approach in which a nanoparticulate, liposome-based agent containing short, highly conserved influenza-derived peptides is delivered to the respiratory tract to elicit potent innate and selective T cell-based ...

Abstract BCR-ABL1 compound mutations can confer high-level resistance to imatinib and other ABL1 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). The third-generation ABL1 TKI ponatinib is effective against BCR-ABL1 point mutants individually, but remains vulnerable to certain BCR-ABL1 compound mutants. To determine the frequency of compound mutations among chronic myeloid leukemia patients on ABL1 TKI therapy, in the present study, we examined a collection of patient samples (N = 47) with clear evidence of 2 BCR- ...

Targeted therapy of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is currently based on small-molecule inhibitors that directly bind the tyrosine kinase domain of BCR-ABL1. This strategy has generally been successful, but is subject to drug resistance because of point mutations in the kinase domain. Kinase activity requires transactivation of BCR-ABL1 following an oligomerization event, which is mediated by the coiled-coil (CC) domain at the N terminus of the protein. Here, we describe a rationally engineered mutant ...

Despite considerable efforts in the past quarter century to improve therapy for sepsis, mortality rates remain unacceptably high. Microbe-derived constituents can induce the host to produce many mediators that can contribute to immune dysregulation, tissue damage, and death. Although endotoxin-mediated events are clearly important in gram-negative infections, gram-positive bacteria can also play a dominant role. Understanding the interplay of microbial constituents and host immune or inflammatory ...
