Dissolved organic matter (DOM) represents the largest organic matter pool in freshwater systems, but much of it remains molecularly uncharacterized. Although freshwater systems cover only a small area of the earth's surface, inland waters are an important component of the global carbon cycle. The traditional idea that rivers are simply conduits for refractory carbon delivery to coastal areas is inconsistent with carbon flux estimates, and streams have been shown to serve as reactors for DOM cycling. ...

Direct-acting antivirals that target nonstructural protein 5A (NS5A), such as daclatasvir, have high potency against the hepatitis C virus (HCV). They are promising clinical candidates, yet little is known about their antiviral mechanisms. We investigated the mechanisms of daclatasvir derivatives. We used a combination of biochemical assays, in silico docking models, and high-resolution imaging to investigate inhibitor-induced changes in properties of NS5A, including its interaction with phosphatidylinositol- ...

A spectroscopic investigation of sodium germanate glasses activated with Ce3+, Tb3+ and Ce3+/Tb3+ is carried out by analyzing their photoluminescence spectra and decay times. Non-radiative energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ is observed upon near-UV excitation at 310 nm (peak emission wavelength of AlGaN-based LEDs). The non-radiative nature of this energy transfer is inferred from the increase in the decay rate of the Ce3+ emission when the glass is co-doped with Tb3+. From an analysis of the Ce3+ ...

We report the fabrication of reactive and degradable cross-linked polymer multilayers by the reactive/covalent layer-by-layer assembly of a non-degradable azlactone-functionalized polymer [poly(2-vinyl-4,4-dimethylazlactone), PVDMA] with hydrolytically or enzymatically degradable polyamine building blocks. Fabrication of multilayers using PVDMA and a hydrolytically degradable poly(β-amino ester) (PBAE) containing primary amine side chains yielded multilayers (∼100 nm thick) that degraded over ∼12 days ...

Objective: Latin American-trained international medical graduates (IMGs) in psychiatry residency face multiple challenges that go beyond their medical training. These challenges call for innovative problem-solving. Although the professional development of IMGs has been discussed in the professional literature, little is written about their experiences. In this report, a group of IMGs reflect on their experiences and describe how they solved challenges. Method: Using cogenerative ethnography, four ...

Introduction Dermatologic complaints are a common reason for emergency department visits. Methods Retrospective chart review from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2019. Patients in the Mayo Clinic Emergency Department receiving dermatology consultation were included. Results Dermatitis (24.7%, n = 113), infection (20.4%, n = 93), and drug reaction (10.3%, n = 47) accounted for the majority of diagnoses. Emergency department providers often provide no diagnosis (38%) or a differential diagnosis (22%), and dermatology ...

Abstract In addition to their ionotropic role, neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) can influence second messenger levels, transmitter release and gene transcription. In this study, we show that nAChRs in an insect CNS control cGMP levels by coupling to NO production. In conditions that inhibit spiking, nicotine induced cGMP synthesis. This increase in cGMP was blocked by nicotinic antagonists, and by inhibitors of both nitric oxide synthase and soluble guanylyl cyclase. The nicotinic‐ ...

While the amount of reactive nitrogen circulating at the global level has increased markedly in the last century, the effects of this increase are largely seen at the regional level due to interacting ecological and socio-economic factors. In contrast with most other regions of the world, Latin America and the Caribbean (LA-Ca) stand out due to the fact that the major input of reactive nitrogen (Nr) still occurs naturally via biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in natural ecosystems as opposed to anthropogenic ...

Recently, both nitric oxide synthase (NOS), and nitric oxide (NO)-sensitive guanylyl cyclase were cloned in Manduca sexta and implicated in several cellular, developmental, and behavioral processes (Nighorn et al. l-Proline moieties bound to a thermoresponsive polymer nanoreactor efficiently directed the asymmetric aldol reaction in water with excellent yields and enantioselectivity (ee). The reactions were efficient at higher temperatures in direct contrast to the low yields and ee values found when the reaction was carried out in a DMF/water mixture due to the location of the l-proline moieties within the hydrophobic pocket inside the core of the nanoreactors. This ideal environment formed for catalysis ...

This paper describes a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor interrogation system based on a microelectromechanical systems tunable Fabry-Perot filter. The shift in the Bragg wavelength due to strain applied to a sensor fiber is detected by means of a correlation algorithm which was implemented on an embedded digital signal processor. The instrument has a 70 nm tuning range, allowing multiple strain sensors to be multiplexed on the same fiber. The performance of the interrogator was characterized using ...

In this work, we used two RAFT agents to produce linear and 4-arm star polymers in a well-controlled miniemulsion system using conventional surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate and hexadecane) and initiators (ammonium persulfate). Abstract Transparent cells in the vertebrate optical tract, such as lens fiber cells and corneal epithelium cells, have specialized proteins that somehow permit only a low level of light scattering in their cytoplasm. It has been shown that both cell types contain (1) beaded intermediate filaments as well as (2) α -crystallin globulins. It is known that genetic and chemical alterations to these specialized proteins induce cytoplasmic opaqueness and visual complications. Crystallins were described previously ...

Volunteer convergence refers to the influx of volunteers to affected areas after large‐scale disasters. There are not only many benefits to volunteer convergence, but it also creates significant logistical challenges that can impede relief efforts. We represent this problem as a queueing system where, in addition to customer arrivals and departures, random ...

These 'slippery' materials thus offer new approaches to prevent fouling on a range of commercial and industrial surfaces, including biomedical devices. However, while SLIPS can prevent fouling on surfaces to which they are applied, they can currently do little to prevent the proliferation of non-adherent (planktonic) organisms, stop them from colonizing other surfaces, or prevent ...
