Summary The extent to which water availability can be used to predict the enlargement and final dimensions of xylem conduits remains an open issue. We reconstructed the time course of tracheid enlargement in Pinus sylvestris trees in central Spain by repeated measurements of tracheid diameter on microcores sampled weekly during a 2 yr period. We analyzed the role of water availability in these dynamics empirically through time‐series correlation analysis and mechanistically by building a model that ...

Abstract Ventriculitis is a complication of meningitis (community-acquired or nosocomial) or other central nervous system (CNS) infections such as brain abscess. They are associated with a different spectrum of microorganisms, from resistant gram-negative bacilli to staphylococci, that can lead serious illness with high mortality. Difficult-to-treat resistance (DTR) gram-negative bacilli may increase to 20% of deaths respective to susceptible isolates of the same bacteria. We present the first report ...

Some of the major Carbon cycle perturbations of the Phanerozoic occurred during the Aptian, in relation to magmatism. The highest temperatures reconstructed for the Cretaceous Period correspond to the Oceanic Anoxic Event of the early Aptian (OAE 1a), an episode of accelerated global change. Here we present a chemostratigraphic study based on osmium isotopes integrated with high-resolution Carbon-Oxygen stable isotope data from the Cau Core (Western Tethys, SE Spain), including a 6.4 Ma record from ...

A period of ocean anoxia about 120 million years ago coincided with high temperatures. A reconstruction of CO2 concentrations shows that volcanic outgassing from the Ontong Java Plateau caused CO2 levels to double during the anoxic event. During the Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a, about 120 million years ago, black shales were deposited in all the main ocean basins1. The event was also associated with elevated sea surface temperatures2,3 and a calcification crisis in calcareous nannoplankton4. These ...

The early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1a represents a major perturbation in the global carbon cycle associated with significant environmental, biotic and sedimentary changes. The signature of this event is a global negative followed by a positive stable carbon isotope excursion (CIE), associated with the input of light-carbon into the climate system and subsequent widespread deposition of organic-rich sediments. This study uses biostratigraphy, C-isotope stratigraphy, biomarkers, and elemental ...

The electrochemical reduction of oxygen has been studied on quinone-modified glassy carbon (GC) electrodes as a function of solution pH using the rotating disk electrode (RDE) technique. The surface of GC was grafted with anthraquinone (AQ) and phenanthrenequinone (PQ) by electrochemical reduction of their diazonium derivatives and the oxygen reduction measurements were carried out at different pHs (pH 7–14). The redox-potentials of surface-bound quinones were determined using cyclic voltammetry (CV). ...

There is actually common consensus to use biological technologies for the treatment of organic wastes. For instance composting involving the aerobic biological stabilization of organic wastes is gaining popularity. The amount of materials and the variety of wastes composted is increasing fast. However composting is a process emitting gases some of which being greenhouse gases (GHG) that favour global warming. In particular carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are responsible for ...

This paper presents the first publicly available cryptanalytic attacks on the GEA-1 and GEA-2 algorithms. Instead of providing full 64-bit security, we show that the initial state of GEA-1 can be recovered from as little as 65 bits of known keystream (with at least 24 bits coming from one frame) in time $$2^{40}$$ GEA-1 evaluations and using 44.5 GiB of memory. The attack on GEA-1 is based on an exceptional interaction of the deployed LFSRs and the key initialization, which is highly unlikely to occur ...

Abstract Background Young stroke can have devastating consequences with respect to quality of life, the ability to work, plan or run a family, and participate in social life. Better insight into risk factors and the long-term prognosis is extremely important, especially in young stroke patients with a life expectancy of decades. To date, detailed information on risk factors and the long-term prognosis in young stroke patients, and more specific risk of mortality or recurrent vascular events, remains ...

Background Identifying patients with COVID‐19 disease who will deteriorate can be useful to assess whether they should receive intensive care, or whether they can be treated in a less intensive way or through outpatient care. In clinical care, routine laboratory markers, such as C‐reactive protein, are used to assess a person's health status. Objectives To assess the accuracy of routine blood‐based laboratory tests to predict mortality and deterioration to severe or critical (from mild or moderate) ...

Abstract Background and objective Exercise capacity decline is a predictor of mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD ). Static pulmonary hyperinflation is a key determinant of exercise performance, but its effect on the longitudinal decline in exercise capacity remains unknown. We aimed to study the relationship between the inspiratory capacity‐to‐total lung capacity ( IC / TLC ) ratio and exercise capacity decline in COPD . Methods We measured IC / TLC and other relevant clinical ...

Markers predicting complications of post-hepatitis C cirrhosis are needed. We asked whether changes in noninvasive markers of fibrosis can predict liver-related complications. This was a case-controlled study using a prospective national cohort (ANRS-CO12-CIRVIR) of 1323 HCV-infected patients with compensated cirrhosis: 97 patients who developed liver-related complications such as hepatocellular carcinoma or hepatic decompensation (cases) matched in age, sex and follow-up duration were compared with ...
