Background It is unknown whether intraoperative hyperglycemia in infants is associated with worse neurodevelopmental outcomes after low-flow cardiopulmonary bypass (LF), deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (CA), or both. Methods In a database review of a prospective trial of 171 infants undergoing arterial switch for D-transposition of the great arteries who were randomly assigned to predominantly LF or CA, glucose was measured after induction (T1), 5 min after cardiopulmonary bypass onset (T2), at ...

To investigate the benefits of a strategy of early Fontan conversion. Using the Australia and New Zealand Fontan Registry, retrospective analysis of their long-term follow-up data was performed. Between 1990 and 2014, a total of 39 patients underwent surgical conversion in 6 centres at a median age of 23.8 years (IQR: 19.3–28.2), 18.7 ± 5.0 years post-Fontan. One centre tended to perform conversion earlier: interval since first documented arrhythmia 2.9 ± 4.0 vs 4.0 ± 4.2 years, average NYHA Class 2 ± 0. ...

The Fanconi anemia DNA repair pathway is pivotal for the efficient repair of DNA interstrand cross-links. Here, we show that FA-defective (Fancc(-)) DT40 cells arrest in G2 phase following cross-link damage and trigger apoptosis. Strikingly, cell death was reduced in Fancc(-) cells by additional deletion of the BRCA1 tumor suppressor, resulting in elevated clonogenic survival. Increased resistance to cross-link damage was not due to loss of toxic BRCA1-mediated homologous recombination but rather ...

ObjectivesWe previously reported that postoperative hemodynamics and developmental outcomes were better among infants randomized to a higher hematocrit value during hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass. However, worse outcomes were concentrated in patients with hematocrit values of 20% or below, and the benefits of hematocrit values higher than 25% were uncertain.MethodsWe compared perioperative hemodynamics and, at 1 year, developmental outcome and brain magnetic resonance imaging in a single-center, ...

Laura Tensen, Bettine Jansen van Vuuren, Cole du Plessis, David G. Marneweck,

South Africa holds a viable population of the endangered African wild dog (Lycaon pictus), with almost 500 individuals divided into (1) an unmanaged population in the Kruger National Park (KNP), (2) a free-roaming population, and (3) a managed metapopulation (MTP) that originated from reintroductions. Because metapopulation reserves are geographically isolated, translocations are ongoing to mimic natural dispersal. During this study, we questioned whether the metapopulation management plan for wild dogs ...

The Southern Ocean greatly contributes to the regulation of the global climate by controlling important heat and carbon exchanges between the atmosphere and the ocean. Rates of climate change on decadal timescales are therefore impacted by oceanic processes taking place in the Southern Ocean, yet too little is known about these processes. Limitations come both from the lack of observations in this extreme environment and its inherent sensitivity to intermittent processes at scales that are not well ...

Postoperative encephalopathy with choreoathetosis is a serious neurologic complication of childhood cardiac surgery. An inadequate understanding of the long-term outcome has limited family counseling and the institution of intervention strategies. Our objective was to define the long-term neurologic, cognitive, and behavioral outcome in this group of patients. By retrospective review we identified all cases of choreoathetosis in our cardiac intensive care unit from 1986 through 1995. During this ...

Research has revealed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) negatively affect sperm function, both in vivo and in vitro. Sperm preparation techniques for assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are potential causes for additional ROS production. This study aimed to correlate the concentration of exogenous H(2)O(2) with sperm motility parameters and intracellular ROS and nitric oxide (NO) levels to reiterate the importance of minimising ROS levels in ART. Human spermatozoa from 10 donors were incubated ...
