The occurrence of 7 of the 11 known ssl genes that are found within the vSaα genomic island of Staphylococcus aureus and encode the novel Ssl family of exoproteins was examined in isolates from cows (42 isolates), goats (4 isolates), sheep (1 isolate), rabbits (3 isolates) and chickens (2 isolates). Based on seven S. aureus genome sequences for human strains NCTC 8325, N315, Mu50, COL, MRSA 252, MW2 and MSSA-476, and bovine strain RF122, along with the ssl reference gene sequences from strains NCTC 6571, ...

The development of contrast sensitivity was measured longitudinally in seven Macaca nemestrina monkeys. Operant conditioning methods were used to train and then test infant monkeys from the ages of 1 to 12 months. Several changes were observed in the contrast sensitivity function, including an overall increase in sensitivity to contrast, a shift in the peak of the function toward higher spatial frequencies, and an increase in the cutoff spatial frequency. The time-courses for the changes in the ...

Purpose Right-hemisphere brain damage (RHD) can affect pragmatic aspects of communication that may contribute to an impaired ability to gather information. Questions are an explicit means of gathering information. Question types vary in terms of the demands they place on cognitive resources. The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study is to test the hypothesis that adults with RHD differ from neurologically healthy adults in the types of questions asked during a structured task. Method Adults ...

We present an overview of the role of the trial coordinator in the Diabetes Control and Complica tions Trial (DCCT). The DCCT is a multicenter clinical trial designed to examine the effects of two different diabetes treatment regimens on the appearance and progression of the early vascular complications of IDDM. Although the specific responsibilities assumed by the trial coordinators differ from center to center, in general they include adminis tration, recruitment, eligibility testing, and patient ...

Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen of man, but is also able to colonize and cause disease in a wide variety of mammals and birds. An extended multilocus sequencing approach, involving multilocus sequence typing (MLST), sas typing, spa typing and agr typing, was used to examine the molecular diversity of 118 S. aureus isolates recovered from a range of host species and to compare these data with the known diversity of human-derived isolates. MLST revealed that the commonest animal-associated ...

Background The benefit of initiation of insulin pump therapy (continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion; CSII) in patients with type 1 diabetes using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has not been studied. A small molecule that safely mimics the ability of dietary restriction (DR) to delay age-related diseases in laboratory animals is greatly sought after. We and others have shown that resveratrol mimics effects of DR in lower organisms. In mice, we find that resveratrol induces gene expression patterns in multiple tissues that parallel those induced by DR and every-other-day feeding. Moreover, resveratrol-fed elderly mice show a marked reduction in signs of aging, including reduced albuminuria, decreased ...

During an infant monkey's first 28 postnatal weeks, the visual contrast sensitivity function develops its characteristic adult form. Contrast sensitivity is depressed relative to that of the adult for all spatial frequencies during the early postnatal weeks. Absolute sensitivity to frequencies below 5 cycles per degree approaches adult levels by 20 weeks after birth, whereas sensitivity to fine spatial detail continues to develop through 28 weeks. The results imply that the development of primate ...

The protective efficacy of oral B subunit killed whole-cell (BS-WC) and killed whole-cell (WC) cholera vaccines was assessed in 63 498 Bangladeshi children aged 2-15 years and women aged over 15 years. OBJECTIVE Abnormally elevated proinsulin secretion has been reported in type 2 and early type 1 diabetes when significant C-peptide is present. We questioned whether individuals with long-standing type 1 diabetes and low or absent C-peptide secretory capacity retained the ability to make proinsulin. To control both fasting and prandial plasma glucose levels in people with diabetes, insulin therapy must mimic "normal" physiological insulin secretion as much as possible. This is achieved with a long-acting insulin injected once or twice daily and a bolus of insulin injected before every meal. Prandial (bolus) insulin can either be regular human insulin (RHI) or a rapid-acting insulin analogue (RAIA). Although the efficacy of RHI has been established over approximately 35 years of clinical use, RAIAs ...

Traditionally, practitioners have reserved insulin therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes until diet, exercise, and treatment with oral agents have failed to maintain glycemic control. Increasing evidence, however, supports advancing insulin therapy earlier in treating diabetes, not only to normalize glycemic control and emulate normal physiologic insulin secretion, but also to delay or prevent disease-associated comorbidity.
