Abstract Pigment epithelium and rod outer segments enriched fractions from bovine eyes were found to contain soluble intracellular proteins that bind retinol. The proteins were identified as high molecular weight lipoglycoproteins (at least 1·5 × 10 6 daltons). The cytosol retinol-binding lipoprotein from pigment epithelium contained 28% lipid (by weight) while that from the rod outer segment fractions lipoprotein contained 65% lipid. The lipids in both cases were predominately phosphatidylcholine and ...

By means of autoradiographic techniques the specific plasma carrier of retinol, namely retinol binding protein (RBP) in a radioactive form (retinol-125I.RBP), bound specifically in vivo to the choroidal surface of intact, isolated bovine pigment epithelial cells. The retinol-125I.RBP did not bind to the retinal surface of the pigment epithelial cells nor did not bind to photoreceptors. Retinol is normally provided to the retina from the blood via a specific complex formation with a receptor on the ...

Joshua Milner and colleagues show that increased TPSAB1 copy number causes a multisystem disorder marked by elevated basal serum tryptase levels. Shared symptoms in affected individuals include irritable bowel syndrome, cutaneous flushing and pruritus, connective tissue abnormalities and dysautonomia. Elevated basal serum tryptase levels are present in 4–6% of the general population, but the cause and relevance of such increases are unknown1,2. Labeled datasets for semantic segmentation are imperfect, especially in medical imaging where borders are often subtle or ill-defined. Little work has been done to analyze the effect that label errors have on the performance of segmentation methodologies. Here we present a large-scale study of model performance in the presence of varying types and degrees of error in training data. We trained U-Net, SegNet, and FCN32 several times for liver segmentation with 10 different modes of ground-truth perturbation. ...

Despite the documented importance of the protein hormone relaxin in reproduction in various mammalian species, the role of relaxin in human reproduction is poorly understood, largely because of the lack of studies in women or in suitable non-human primate models. Here we describe the establishment of a non-human primate model of early human pregnancy and its use in defining the actions of relaxin. Results demonstrate that relaxin exerts dramatic uterine effects including pronounced increase in uterine ...

The permeability properties of frog rod photoreceptor outer segment discs were investigated in preparations of purified, dark-adapted, outer segment fragments by the techniques of direct volume measurement and electron microscopy. Outer segment discs were found to swell and contract reversibly in response to changes in the osmotic pressure of the bathing medium in accordance with the Boyle-van't Hoff law. By use of the criterion of reversible osmotic swelling, the disc membrane is impermeable to ...

Abstract Neutron scattering is exquisitely sensitive to the position, concentration, and dynamics of hydrogen atoms in materials and is a powerful tool for the characterization of structure‐function and interfacial relationships in biological systems. Modern neutron scattering facilities offer access to a sophisticated, nondestructive suite of instruments for biophysical characterization that provides spatial and dynamic information spanning from Ångstroms to microns and from picoseconds to microseconds, ...
