Emulsions are the most common form of skin care products. However, these systems may exhibit some instability. Therefore, when developing emulsions for topical application it is interesting to verify whether they have suitable physical and mechanical characteristics and further assess their stability. The aim of this work was to study the stability of emulsion systems, which varied in the proportion of the emulsifying agent cetearyl alcohol (and) sodium lauryl sulfate (and) sodium cetearyl sulfate ( ...

The aim of this research was to study, in vitro by resultant-weight measurement and in vivo by γ-scintigraphy experiments in humans, the floatation behavior of systems obtained by modules assembled in void configuration. The assembled system technology allowed the manufacturing of a system characterized by the presence of an internal void space that provided an apparent density lower than water. The gastro-retention times of floating assembled systems were determined in comparison with non-floating ...

This paper proposes an extended version of the long-run solvency constraint model developed by Coakley et al. [Coakley, J., Kulasi, F., Smith, R., 1996. Current Account Solvency and the Feldstein–Horioka Puzzle, Economic Journal 106, 620–627.] that provides a theoretical, and empirically testable, distinction from the Feldstein–Horioka hypothesis. The empirical application shows that the Feldstein–Horioka approach presents a useful, but incomplete, measure of capital mobility in 6 OECD countries.

Using a large administratively matched employer–employee data set, we analyse the gender wage gap in the Portuguese tourism labour market. As background, employment and pay in the tourism industry are thoroughly characterized. Using the Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition of the gender wage gap, we find that 45% of the gap is due to differences in attributes of male and female workers in tourism. Our estimate of the coefficient of discrimination in the tourism industry (8.4%) puts it well below the non- ...

Biomimetic principles were applied to design N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) hydrogels with enhanced affinity for the antiglaucoma drugs acetazolamide (ACT) and ethoxzolamide (ETOX). These inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase are orally given to decrease intraocular pressure, but their systemic side effects prompt the development of devices for ocular delivery. Receptors for ACT and ETOX were created in the hydrogels by mimicking the active site of the metallo-enzyme, using 1- ...

Hydrogels with high affinity for carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitor drugs have been designed trying to mimic the active site of the physiological metallo-enzyme receptor. Using hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) as the backbone component, zinc methacrylate, 1- or 4-vinylimidazole (1VI or 4VI), and N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA) were combined at different ratios to reproduce in the hydrogels the cone-shaped cavity of the CA, which contains a Zn2+ ion coordinated to three histidine residues. 4VI resembles ...

The suitability of solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) for the encapsulation of risperidone (RISP), an antipsychotic lipophilic drug, was assessed for oral administration. The hot high pressure homogenization (HPH) and the ultrasound (US) technique were used as production methods for SLN. All the studies on the SLN formulations were done in parallel, in order to compare the results and conclude about the advantages and limitations of both techniques. The particle sizes were in the nanometer range for all ...

The hydrophobic character of most drug molecules and their potential for degradation under the hostile environment of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) constitutes the main obstacle in the development of a successful oral drug delivery system, since these are related to limitations of bioavailability and absorption processes. However, according to the advantages of the oral route, alternative ways of drug administration in the oral cavity should be considered. In this context, it is essential to have ...

Important changes characterize the recent evolution of the schooling of workers in Portugal. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the consequences of those changes in the gender wage gap. In particular, we analyze and compare the way that this process has evolved in the groups of young workers and older workers. Our findings suggest that the major part of the pay gap refers to employer discrimination practices for both age group cohorts: in the case of the younger workers, discrimination ...
