SummaryBackground & aimsGLIM criteria have become a worldwide standard for diagnosing malnutrition. They emphasize the measurement of muscle mass but do not provide clear recommendations for the use of different diagnostic tools and cut-offs. Measurements of body composition by using computerized tomography (CT) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) are both easily accessible in hospitalized patients. However, there is sparse data regarding the comparison for GLIM diagnosis of malnutrition and ...

A guiding attachment is described that transforms a conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging surface coil into a stereotaxic biopsy unit. Eight patients, aged 38-66 years (mean, 54 years), with suspect breast lesions detected exclusively at contrast material-enhanced MR imaging underwent MR-guided needle biopsy with this unit. Diagnostic material was successfully aspirated in all patients (four carcinomas, three fibroadenomas, and one intraductal hyperplasia), and the diagnosis was subsequently ...

Hendra virus (HeV) and Nipah virus (NiV), belonging to the genus Henipavirus, are among the most pathogenic of viruses in humans. Old World fruit bats (family Pteropodidae) are the natural reservoir hosts. Molecular and serological studies found evidence of henipavirus infection in fruit bats from several African countries. However, little is known about the potential for spillover into domestic animals in East Africa, particularly pigs, which served as amplifying hosts during the first outbreak of ...

The heparin-binding protein midkine is a potent growth factor with emerging roles in numerous inflammatory diseases. Beyond its characterization in embryogenesis and organ development, ample insights into its function have been collected from experimental disease models using knockout animals or knockdown intervention strategies. Here a comprehensive overview on midkine and its functions in atherogenesis and kidney diseases is provided. Molecular clues to key signalling pathways (Akt, ERK, HIF1α) ...

Receptor-mediated endocytosis has been observed after agonist occupation of several G protein-coupled receptors, which contributes to the desensitization response to agonist stimulation; however, the cellular signals required to initiate this process are unclear. In this study, we developed and characterized a new antagonist analogue of cholecystokinin (D-Tyr-Gly-[(Nle28,31,D-Trp30)cholecystokinin-26-32]-phen eth yl ester) that can be tagged with a fluorescent rhodamine and radioiodinated. The definition of reliable outcome measures is of increasing interest in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).In this retrospective study, we analyzed the longitudinal reliability of clinical and radiological endpoints in 29 ambulant patients with DMD. Clinical outcome measures included motor function measure (MFM) and timed function tests, while quantitative MRI data were mean fat fraction (MFF) and T2 relaxation time of thigh muscles. Statistical analysis was based on 3-, 6-, and 12-month ...

The Peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1) gene maps to chromosome arm 1p and is hemizygously deleted and epigenetically silenced in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 or 2 (IDH)-mutant and 1p/19q-codeleted oligodendroglial tumors. In contrast, IDH-wildtype astrocytic gliomas including glioblastomas mostly lack epigenetic silencing and express PRDX1 protein. In our study, we investigated how PRDX1 contributes to the infiltrative growth of IDH-wildtype gliomas. Focusing on p38α-dependent pathways, we analyzed clinical data ...

Abstract. Here we present the high-resolution continuous flow analysis (CFA) data from the top 479 m of the East Greenland Ice coring Project (EGRIP) ice core covering the past 3.8 kyr. The data consist of 1 mm depth-resolution profiles of calcium, sodium, ammonium, nitrate, and electrolytic conductivity as well as decadal averages of these profiles. The nominally 1 mm data represent an oversampling of the record as the true resolution is limited by the analytical setup to approximately 1 cm. Alongside ...

This article investigated the dimensionality, measurement invariance, and cross-cultural variations of social desirability. A total of 3,471 university students from 20 countries completed an adapted version of the Marlowe–Crowne scale. A two-dimensional structure was revealed in the pooled sample, distinguishing enhancement (endorsement of positive self-description) and denial (rejection of negative self-description). The factor structure was supported in most countries; medium-sized item bias was ...
