Recent studies of rape have emphasized the attractiveness of the victim as a determinant in people's judgments of the victim's blameworthiness. The present study provided 120 undergraduates with four hypothetical rape stories in which the victim's pre-rape behavior and attractiveness were independently varied. The results indicate that the victim's attractiveness is not a determining factor of the victim's blameworthiness when subjects are given descriptions of victim's pre-rape behavior. The results ...

The interaction of ultrathin films on Pt with a W(111) surface has been studied using low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). When W(111) is covered with $̆1.1 × 1015 Pt atomscm2 and heated in the range 800–1600 K, the surface undergoes a massive restructuring to form microscopic facets. At 1200 K., the average facet dimensions are ≳ 100 Å, and the dominant facet orientation is W(211). The faceting appears to be driven by a Pt-enhanced ...

We have investigated the detailed methanation kinetics for a clean and a titania-covered Pt foil. Pressure dependences for H2 and CO were measured between 0.01 and 100 Torr, and Auger electron spectra (AES) were taken of the surfaces following reaction. For the foil not covered by titania, AES indicated that there is no carbon on the surface following reaction, even for H2CO pressure ratios as low as 0.03. Kinetic measurements indicated that the reaction order for CO changed from first order at low ...

Recent work examining the interaction between titania and transition metals has indicated that a partially reduced titania overlayer can form on the surface of a titania-supported catalyst. In addition, the authors have shown that a Pt foil with a titania overlayer exhibits the same methanation rates as are reported for actual titania-supported Pt catalysts, even though complete suppression of CO and H/sub 2/ adsorption is observed. Unusual support effects are observed for metals on niobia as well. ...

The growth of platinum overlayers (sub-monolayer to multiple layer coverages) on a clean W(110) surface is studied by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Based on Auger peak amplitudes, thermally evaporated platinum appears to grow in the Frank-van der Merve mode on W(110), at least for the first few layers. Annealing of platinum deposited at 90 K shows distinct changes in Auger ratios and adsorption states of molecular CO, providing evidence for changes in ...

The soybean light-harvesting complex II (LHC II) was composed of one major and three minor chlorophyll a/b (Cab) binding proteins. This study demonstrated that the soybean genome contained at least 11 genes that code for these Cab proteins. Three members of the soybean Cab gene family were characterized. Cab 3 coded for a 25.7 kD mature apoprotein with a 32 amino acid transit peptide. Comparisons with previously published Cab protein sequences indicated that Cab 3 coded for the major Cab protein of ...

Ultrathin films of platinum on tungsten display a rich variety of phenomena related to epitaxial growth. Pt grows on W(110) in a layer-by-layer mode at 300 K; upon annealing multilayers of Pt to T > 800 K, clusters of three-dimensional crystallites form on top of a pseudo-morphic Pt monolayer. When oxygen is present on the surface, the Pt monolayer is no longer stable. Annealing coadsorbed Pt and O on W(110) causes nearly all the Pt to agglomerate into clusters as the oxygen largely replaces the monolayer ...
