Sulfur dioxide is now considered to be a toxic chemical by most world health authorities. However, it remains an irreplaceable additive in enology for wine conservation, combining antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Sweet white wines from botrytized grapes retain particularly high SO2 levels due to their high sulfur dioxide binding power. This paper presents a new method for reducing this binding power by removing some of the carbonyl compounds responsible, which are naturally present in these ...

Purpose Elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have a poor prognosis, and innovative maintenance therapy could improve their outcomes. Androgens, used in the treatment of aplastic anemia, have been reported to block proliferation of and initiate differentiation in AML cells. We report the results of a multicenter, phase III, randomized open-label trial exploring the benefit of adding androgens to maintenance therapy in patients 60 years of age or older. Patients and Methods A total of ...

Pectolytic enzymatic preparations used in enology come from Aspergillus niger. They have a desirable principal activity and several secondary activities. Among these secondary activities, three classes of esterases were detected: an esterase specific for ester linkage between cinnamic acid and alcohol (cinnamate esterase); an esterase acting on ester linkage between two phenolic rings (depsidase); and an esterase hydrolysing ester linkage between phenolic acids and straight-chain alcohols (phenyl esterase). ...

Endovascular treatment is the first line therapy for the management of ruptured and unruptured intracranial aneurysms, but delayed aneurysm rupture leading to bleeding/rebleeding can occur subsequently. ARETA (Analysis of Recanalization after Endovascular Treatment of intracranial Aneurysm) is a prospective, multicenter study conducted to analyze aneurysm recanalization. We analyzed delayed bleeding and rebleeding in this large cohort.16 neurointerventional departments prospectively enrolled patients ...

Coiling, including balloon-assisted coiling (BAC), is the first-line therapy for ruptured and unruptured aneurysms. Its efficacy can be clinically evaluated by bleeding/rebleeding rate after coiling, and anatomically evaluated by aneurysm occlusion post-procedure and during follow-up. We aimed to analyze immediate post-coiling aneurysm occlusion and associated factors within the Analysis of Recanalization after Endovascular Treatment of intracranial Aneurysm (ARETA) population.Between December 2013 ...

In our tertiary care center, the reported susceptibility of E. coli blood isolates to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid exceeded 90% in 2005 and showed a progressive decrease to 50% by 2017. In this study, we investigate whether there is a real increase in resistant E. coli strains or if this apparent decline in reported susceptibility might be attributed to the substitution of CLSI by EUCAST guidelines in 2014. We randomly selected 237 E. coli blood isolates (stored at − 80 °C) from 1985 to 2018 and reassessed ...

Abstract Background Clostridium sticklandii belongs to a cluster of non-pathogenic proteolytic clostridia which utilize amino acids as carbon and energy sources. Isolated by T.C. Stadtman in 1954, it has been generally regarded as a "gold mine" for novel biochemical reactions and is used as a model organism for studying metabolic aspects such as the Stickland reaction, coenzyme-B12- and selenium-dependent reactions of amino acids. With the goal of revisiting its carbon, nitrogen, and energy metabolism, ...

Sweet white wines from botrytized grapes present high SO2 levels because of their high sulfur dioxide binding power. The objective of this work was to develop a new method for reducing this binding power by partially eliminating the carbonyl compounds naturally present in these wines that are responsible for this phenomenon. A selective liquid–solid removal technique was developed. Phenylsulfonylhydrazine was selected as the best candidate for removing carbonyl compounds. Its reactivity in the presence ...

A preparative HPLC method, which preserves wine aromas and isolates fruity characteristics in specific fractions, was applied to red wine aroma extracts. Various odor-active zones were detected in typical fractions by GC-O analysis of their extracts. Through further GC-MS analyses, the aromatic compounds responsible for 15 of these odoriferous zones were identified as various ethyl esters and alkyl acetates. In view of their olfactory thresholds, the concentrations of these compounds had no direct ...

Exposure to vectors of infectious diseases has been associated with antibody responses against salivary antigens of arthropods among people living in endemic areas. This immune response has been proposed as a surrogate marker of exposure to vectors appropriate for evaluating the protective efficacy of antivectorial devices. Abstract Introduction Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine and the pelvis is an important tool to evaluate bone disease in patients with symptomatic multiple myeloma (MM) at the time of diagnosis. In the context of high-dose therapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), it has also been reported that the number of MRI focal lesions (> 7) and the presence of diffuse pattern correlate with inferior survival (Walker et al.
