Production of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is becoming increasingly popular owing to its environmentally friendly properties. Based on this benefit of BNC production, researchers have also begun to examine the capacity for cellulose production through microbial hosts. Indeed, several research groups have developed processes for BNC production, and many studies have been published to date, with the goal of developing methods for large-scale production. During BNC bioproduction, the culture medium ...

Angiotensin-induced vasodilation, involving type 2 receptor (AT2R)-induced generation of nitric oxide (NO; by endothelial NO synthase) and endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factors, may be limited to women. To distinguish the contribution of female sex hormones and chromosomes to AT2R function and endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor-mediated vasodilation, we made use of the four-core genotype model, where the testis-determining Sry gene has been deleted (Y(-)) from the Y chromosome, allowing ...

The effect of poly(ethylene glycol), PEG, on the enzymatic activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) in the oxidation of glucose-6-phosphate (G-6-P), using NADP+ as co-enzyme was investigated. The enzymatic activity was determined by means of spectrophotometry in three different media: pure Tris–HCl buffer, solution of PEG400 (20 wt.%) and of PEG4000 (20 wt.%), both in buffer. Comparing the enzymatic activity values measured in pure buffer with those in the polymer solutions, an increase ...

The in vitro effect of silver nanoparticles of the Duddingtonia flagrans filtrate enriched with chitin was evaluated on infective larvae of cyathostomins (L3). After biosynthesis, an assay was carried out with two experimental groups in microtubes, for a period of 24 h: G1 (AgNP's-D. flagrans (43.4 μg/mL) + 120 L3) and G2 (distilled water + 120 L3). At the end of this period, AgNP's-D. flagrans (G1) demonstrated an effect on L3 with a 43% reduction (p < 0.01) in relation to G2. Thus, the authors suggest new ...

The influence of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) on gestational outcomes have been studied and checked whether differing TSH levels are relevant on human reproduction outcomes. International guidelines recommend TSH values <2.5 mIU/L in women trying to conceive, since values above this level are related to a higher frequency of adverse reproductive outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate whether TSH values correlate with different gestational outcomes in euthyroid infertile women without autoimmune ...

This syndrome affects around 50% of patients with colon cancer and is directly responsible for the death of at least 20% of all cancer patients. Systemic inflammation has been recently proposed to underline most of cachexia‐related ...

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced by both enzymatic and non-enzymatic systems within eukaryotic cells and play important roles in cellular physiology and pathophysiology. Although physiological concentrations are crucial for ensuring cell survival, ROS overproduction is detrimental to cells, and considered key-factors for the development of several diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disorders, and cancer. Cancer cells are usually submitted to higher ROS levels that ...
