Leigh Goldstein,

This essay examines the introduction of public affairs programming to the gendered space of US daytime television at the end of the 1950s. The two series I analyse, Woman! and Purex Specials for Women, addressed their audiences as a collective of ‘trapped housewives’, conflating isolation and depression and offering the medium of television as solace for both. I argue that the primetime news and public affairs' imperative to inform and educate became, by virtue of being transplanted to daytime, a ...

Kameri Christy-McMullin,

Given the disproportionate and increasing number of impoverished women, and poor women's increased vulnerability to woman abuse, it is crucial we examine economic policies in regards to their equity and adequacy for abused women. Current policies and programs designed to address the economic resources/needs of abused women are analyzed. Limitations in current policies are addressed, and a recommendation is made for the formation and implementation of a policy that would serve to empower women economically. ...

Frank J. Berry,

This article considers the relationship between two sites for the staging of feminine subjectivity in early twentieth-century France: the woman's magazine and the domestic interior. At a time when furniture and interior decoration were said to represent, in some way, a person's individuality, this article asks how the readers of women's magazines were addressed as subjects in a debate about the subjectivity of the interior, from which they had previously been excluded. The luxury magazine Fémina ( ...

M. Turner, Louise C. Kenny, Žarko Alfirević,

The need for new drugs in pregnancy is widely recognized. This review identifies several unique challenges and describes some solutions. Specific studies and drug development programs need careful planning that accounts for the needs of regulatory agencies. The perinatal (obstetric/pediatric) community needs to establish collaborations to develop methodologies, to facilitate data sharing, and to lobby for research and access to medicines. There is a need to gather and present information that promotes ...
