The effect of the level or source of dietary protein or protein-derived peptides on Ca absorption is not well understood. We determined, therefore, the influence of habitual dietary casein level, meal casein and meal casein phosphopeptide (CPP) on Ca absorption in the rat. True fractional Ca absorption was investigated in male 7-week-old rats, Wistar strain, in three separate studies using a faecal 47 Sc : 47 Ca ratio method. In studies A and C, rats ( n 8 per group) were fed on a purified diet containing ...

We report an outbreak of Clostridium difficile-associated disease (CDAD) in a large Dublin hospital. From January to June 1995, inclusive, 139 patients were affected; the mean age of cases was 68·8 ± 19 years. Clinical information is available for 73 cases identified during the first four months of the outbreak. The influence on the structure-activity relationships (S. A. R.) of the stereochemistry and various alkyl, aryl, aralkyl and heterocyclic substituents at the two chiral centres in the dipeptide side-chain of a new series of penicillins was examined. In many cases the effects of these changes had a pronounced influence on the degree of activity against Gram-positive and especially Gram-negative bacteria. Several compounds indicated that the size, shape and spatial disposition of a substituent were ...

The influence on the antibacterial activity of introducing a 6α-methoxy group into carbenicillin, and various 6α-substituents into sulbenicillin and piperacillin was examined. Further variations of the side chain aryl group were examined in the 6α-methoxy substituted series. This led to the identification of disodium 6β-(D, L-2-carboxy-2-thien-3-ylacetamido)-6α-methoxypenicillanate (5b) as a β-lactamase stable derivative with useful activity against Enterobacteriaceae, and disodium 6β-[D-2-(4-aminophenyl)- ...

Paraplegia is a rare but devastating complication, which may follow thoracoabdominal aortic surgery. Many adjuncts have been developed to reduce this risk including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage. Acetazolamide (carbonic anhydrase inhibitor) is a drug used to counteract mountain sickness and one of its effects is to reduce CSF production. Here, we report its first postoperative application in thoracoabdominal surgery with the aim of reducing cerebrospinal cord perfusion pressure and reducing risk ...

Paraplegia is a complication that may occur following surgery or endovascular stenting of thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic pathology. Measuring transcranial motor evoked potentials (tcMEPs) has been shown to provide a reliable measure of spinal cord function during such procedures allowing interventions to protect cord function. The Eurasian red squirrel's (Sciurus vulgaris) history in Ireland is largely unknown, but the original population is thought to have been driven to extinction by humans in the seventeenth century, and multiple records exist for its subsequent reintroduction in the nineteenth century. However, it is currently unknown how these reintroductions affect the red squirrel population today, or may do so in the future. In this study, we report on the development of a DNA toolkit for the non-invasive genetic ...

Background Platelets play a key role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and acute coronary and cerebrovascular syndromes. Inhibition of platelet function by acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) has been shown to reduce the incidence atherothrombotic events in patients with coronary, cerebrovascular, or peripheral vascular disease. Thienopyridine agents, however, including ticlopidine and clopidogrel, inhibit the adenosine diphosphate receptor and have modestly superior effects compared ...
