Metastasis is associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer. Although some studies suggest beta-blockers increase survival by delaying metastasis, others have been discordant. This study provides both insights into the anomalous findings and identifies potential biomarkers that may be treatment targets. Cell line models of basal-type and oestrogen receptor-positive breast cancer were profiled for basal levels of adrenoceptor gene/protein expression, and β2-adrenoceptor mediated cell behaviour ...

In recent publications, we have shown that repeated bending and unbending during tension can significantly increase the percent elongation-to-fracture (ETF) of metallic sheets. A custom-built machine for cyclic bending under tension (CBT) testing was designed and used to test several sheet metals. In particular, the improvements in ETF using CBT were over 3× relative to simple tension (ST) for commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) sheets. The present paper evaluates the influence of specimen width on the ...

Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) found in plasma and other body fluids circulate in association with specific binding proteins. We report here the cloning and the nucleotide sequence of cDNAs for the growth-hormone-dependent acid-stable IGF binding protein, hIGF-BP3. The derived protein begins with a putative 27-amino acid signal peptide followed by 264 residues of the mature polypeptide. The predicted sequence contains three potential N-linked glycosylation sites and shares two region of homology ...

Continuous bending under tension (CBT) has been shown to increase room temperature elongation-to-failure in various sheet metals beyond that of simple tension. A greater understanding of deformation mechanisms in CBT would allow for its elongation-enhancing effects to be more fully exploited, creating potential for new forming strategies. CBT-induced cyclic bending/unbending stresses combined with applied macroscopic tensile stresses create complex through-thickness stress profiles, where differing ...

Summary Consensus guidelines for the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease were produced by gastroenterologists, gastrointestinal surgeons and a cross-section of general practitioners (GPs) from Leicestershire in order to develop a seamless pattern of care with a common approach to diagnosis and treatment. It was hoped that the guidelines would encourage a movement towards care in the community for many patients with stable disease and so speed up new consultation rates. The study ...
