The effects of undernutrition during suckling on neurochemical and behavioral parameters were investigated in adult rats. Young rats were undernourished by feeding their mothers an 8% (by wt) protein diet from delivery until weaning (d 21). Mothers of control rats were fed a 20% protein diet. After weaning, normal and undernourished rats were fed a 20% protein diet until 90–120 d of age, when the rats were subjected to footshocks of low and high intensity during escape training sessions. The memory ...

Abstract The present report examined the effects of undernutrition and handling on shuttle and footshock escape avoidance behavior of female rats. Rats were undernourished by feeding their dams a 7% casein diet from birth until 23 days of life. During this period rats were separated from their dams for 4 to 10 min. On days 23 and 24 after delivery, young rats were subjected to sessions in a two‐way shuttle avoidance task. The results demonstrated that nonstimulated and stimulated undernourished ...

The involvement of the hypothalamic beta-endorphinergic system in behavioral processes has previously been studied in adult rats. In the present report, we studied the effects of undernutrition and of inhibitory avoidance training on the hypothalamic beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity of 21-day-old and adult rats. Rats were undernourished by feeding their dams an 8% protein diet from the day of delivery until weaning (21 days of age). The beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity was measured by radioimmunoassay. ...

University of Wisconsin solution (UWS) is the gold standard for graft preservation. Celsior solution (CS) is a new solution not as yet widely used in liver grafts. The aim of this study was to compare the liver function of transplanted grafts stored in these 2 preservation solutions. The primary endpoints were the rates of primary nonfunction (PNF) and primary dysfunction (PDF). We performed a prospective and pseudorandomized study that included 196 patients (representing 104 and 92 livers preserved ...

Caffeine is widely consumed in beverages and food, and its consumption in high doses is associated with anxiety increase. Stress situations are often associated to coffee consumption, and have a strong influence on oxidative DNA damage. As there are sex-specific differences in many metabolic, neurochemical and behavioral aspects, the aim of this study is to verify the interaction between chronic consumption of caffeine and chronic stress on anxiety and DNA breaks in the hippocampus on male and female ...

Extracellular ATP and adenosine modulate synaptic transmission in hippocampal neurons. ATP released from neural cells is hydrolyzed to adenosine by a chain of ecto-nucleotidases. ATP diphosphohydrolase hydrolyses ATP and ADP nucleotides to AMP and 5′-nucleotidase hydrolyses AMP to adenosine. In this work, we investigated the ATPase and ADPase activities of ATP diphosphohydrolase in cultured hippocampal neurons. The apparent Michaelis–Menten constant (Km) was 233.9±14.6 and 221.8±63.6 μM, with a calculated ...

In previous work we showed that phosphorylation of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), an astrocyte marker, is increased by glutamate in hippocampal slices from immature rats via a type II metabotropic receptor. In the present work we show that glutamate also stimulates GFAP phosphorylation in microslices prepared from immature cerebellar cortex, but by a different receptor mechanism from that observed in the hippocampus. Thus, in cerebellar microslices, NMDA consistently stimulated GFAP phosphorylation, ...

Anorectic effects of caffeine are controversial in the literature, while stress and obesity are growing problems in our society. Since many stressed people are coffee drinkers, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of stress and chronic administration of caffeine on feeding behavior and body weight in male and female rats. Wistar rats (both males and females) were divided into 3 groups: control (receiving water), caffeine 0.3 g/L and caffeine 1.0 g/L (in the drinking water). ...

Vivipary, the germination of seeds before they are shed from the parent plant, is a rare event in angiosperms involving complex ecophysiological processes. Pseudovivipary and cryptovivipary occur in approximately 30 (2%) species of the cactus family. A remarkable case of vivipary in Epiphyllum phyllanthus is described here. Information is provided regarding the biology of viviparous fruits, morphology, mortality, survival rates of viviparous offspring, and some eco-evolutionary implications of this ...

This is a reply to Ortega-Baes' et al. (2010) survey of 25 Argentinean species of cacti evaluated for vivipary. We argue that the sample size and geographic area of the species investigated is insufficient to totally exclude the putative commonness of this condition in the Cactaceae. We indicate possible reasons why they did not find viviparous fruits in their survey. Failure to detect vivipary in cacti of NW Argentina may be correlated with limited taxonomic sampling and geographic region in addition ...

Wide-band tracheids (WBTs) were present in species with dimorphic and monomorphic wood. In all types of dimorphic wood in which WBTs were present, the phase that contains the WBTs is produced first. In seedlings of Cipocereus minensis the first phase consists of vessels and parenchyma in a matrix of wide-band tracheids and the second phase consists of a fibrous matrix with vessels and parenchyma (wide-band tracheid wood followed by fibrous wood). Adult plants of Discocactus placentiformis and Melocactus ...

This study examined the effects of two chronic stress regimens upon depressive-like behavior, A1 and A2A adenosine receptor binding and immunocontent. Male rats were subjected to unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) or to chronic restraint stress (CRS) for 40 days. Subsequently, depressive-like behaviors (forced swimming and consumption of sucrose) were evaluated, and A1 adenosine or A2A adenosine receptors were examined in the hippocampus or striatum, respectively. UCMS animals demonstrated depressive- ...

N-Methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) preconditioning is evoked by subtoxic concentrations of NMDA (50 μM), which has been shown previously to lead to transient resistance to subsequent lethal dose of glutamate or NMDA in cultured neurons. The purpose of this study was to investigate the participation of adenosine A1 and A2A receptors on NMDA preconditioning against glutamate-induced cellular damage in cerebellar granule cells. NMDA preconditioning prevented the stimulatory effect induced by glutamate on AMP ...

Thermogravimetry was applied to evaluate the heavy distillation residues of different Brazilian crude oils. The thermal characteristic of the samples could be studied by only one experiment. It was possible to evidence the linear correlations among the results obtained by the TG curves and by the patterned methodologies, therefore anticipating volatile and carbonaceous materials (coke) formed during their thermal cracking. The correlations herewith observed, in a short period of time, provided comparisons ...

Abstract: Adenosine A 1 receptors as well as other components of the adenylate cyclase system have been studied in cultured cerebellar granule cells. No significant changes in adenosine A 1 receptor number, assayed by radioligand binding in intact cells, were detected from 2 days in vitro (DIV) until 7 DIV. Nevertheless, a decline in this parameter was detected at 9 DIV. The steady‐state levels of α‐G s and α‐G i , detected by immunoblotting, showed similar profiles, increasing from 2 to 5 DIV and ...
