1. Particle filtration by the oyster Crassostrea virginica was studied in the 1.0 to 12.0 µ size range in relation to naturally occurring particles and to kaolinite suspensions in filtered river water.2. Oysters were held in troughs of flowing water under conditions similar to their natural environment. Particle number and volumes entering and leaving the troughs were enumerated using a Coulter electronic particle counter. Particle diameter was expressed as that of a sphere having a volume equal ...

Distribution, quantitative abundance, and period of maximum set of the polyp stage of the sea nettleChrysaora quinquecirrha DeSor were investigated in the York River, Virginia, from September 1966 to November 1967. The distribution and abundance of the medusoid stage were also determined. Effects of varying salinity and temperature on the polyp were investigated in the laboratory. The polyp stage occurred on oysters and shells dredged in a 12-mile segment of the river. Medusae appeared in tributary ...

Current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) apply only to health effects studies. The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) GLPs already include both health effects, ecotox and chemical fate studies. To provide consistency in inspections and enforcement, an extension of the regulations is in development. These are designed as "generic" GLPs, that is, they are intended to be sufficiently broad ...

Females of the parasitoid wasp Dinocampus coccinellae are known to parasitise both male and female coccinellid hosts. It is suggested that female hosts provide more resources for developing wasp larvae because they tend to be larger than male hosts, and female coccinellids have a much greater food intake than males. Thus the wasp's lifetime reproductive success should be increased by ovipositing preferentially in female rather than male hosts when given a choice.Laboratory experiments, using Coccinella ...

Quantities of suspended matter removed by oysters ( Crassostrea virginica ) and deposited as feces or pseudofeces varied seasonally, reaching maxima in September. Below 2.8C, measurable quantities were not produced. At certain seasons, levels of suspended solids influenced quantities of biodeposits. Laboratory studies indicated that the oysters on 0.405 hectare of an estuarine bottom may produce up to 981 kg of feces and pseudofeces weekly. Of the particles, 95% were under 3 µ in diameter. a ll types ...

Pulmonary involvement in acute rheumatic fever is rare. Clinical and laboratory findings in rheumatic pneumonia are non-specific. Most of the cases of rheumatic pneumonia described in recent years have had a fulminant course often resulting in death. Autopsy findings are suggestive of but not specific for rheumatic pneumonia. In this article a case of pneumonia associated with acute rheumatic fever is described. Pneumonia and carditis occurred simultaneously in a 10-year-old boy treated without ...
