We have studied the effects of ouabain and taurine on isolated perfused guinea-pig and rat hearts. Ouabain always exerts, in rat a negative inotropic effect in normal and low calcium medium, while it exerts in guinea-pig a positive inotropic effect. Taurine exerts in both species an effect similar to ouabain. Effects of taurine and ouabain are additive. The mechanism of action of cardiac glycosides in rat and guinea-pig is discussed in terms of excitation-contraction coupling and calcium movements. ...

Rat left atria superfused at 35°C were submitted to stimulation trains of varying frequency (0.2 to 5 Hz). During stimulation the diastolic potential depolarized and later on repolarized to a level near that of the prestimulation potential. At the end of the stimulation period the membrane potential transiently hyperpolarized. These phenomena were magnified by an increase in the frequency. The stimulation repolarization phase and the rate of rise of the action potential upstroke were similarly reduced ...

Common agricultural practices such as excessive use of agro-chemicals, deep tillage and luxury irrigation have degraded soils, polluted water resources and contaminated the atmosphere. There is increasing concern about interrelated environmental problems such as soil degradation, desertification, erosion, and accelerated greenhouse effects and climate change. The decline in organic matter content of many soils is becoming a major process of soil degradation, particularly in European semi-arid Mediterranean ...

In this study, the evolution of the most important parameters (temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and C/N ratio) describing the composting process of olive oil husk with other organic wastes was investigated. Four windrows for obtaining two mixed wastes composts (MWCs) and two green wastes composts (GWCs) were prepared. All the raw materials used showed appropriate physical and chemical properties for composting process. The total organic carbon values of ...

The traditional olive oil extraction process generates a large amount of liquid by-product that could be recycled as an organic fertilizer. The aim of this 3-year field experiment was to assess the effects of olive mill wastewater (OMWW) application on yields of ryegrass, proteic pea, and clover crops and on soil properties. The following treatments were compared: OMWW at 80 m3 ha−1 (80_OMWW), OMWW at 120 m3 ha−1 (120_OMWW), and an unfertilized control (Contr). The yields of ryegrass increased 40% and ...

Conventional farming has led to extensive use of chemicals and, in turn, to negative environmental impacts such as soil erosion, groundwater pollution and atmosphere contamination. Farming systems should be more sustainable to reach economical and social profitability as well as environmental preservation. A possible solution is to adopt precision agriculture, a win–win option for sustaining food production without degrading the environment. Precision technologies are used for gathering information ...

Hyperspectral (HS) data represents an extremely powerful means for rapidly detecting crop stress and then aiding in the rational management of natural resources in agriculture. However, large volume of data poses a challenge for data processing and extracting crucial information. Multivariate statistical techniques can play a key role in the analysis of HS data, as they may allow to both eliminate redundant information and identify synthetic indices which maximize differences among levels of stress. ...

Furthermore, application of composted organic waste could be a way to sustain both soil fertility and production, especially in organic farming. Therefore, the aim of this research was to evaluate the phytotoxicity and the effects of application of olive pomace composts on emmer performance and soil properties. Two types of olive pomace composts, with a different initial ...
