We study complex networks formed by triangulations and higher-dimensional simplicial complexes representing closed evolving manifolds. In particular, for triangulations, the set of possible transformations of these networks is restricted by the condition that at each step, all the faces must be triangles. Stochastic application of these operations leads to random networks with different architectures. We perform extensive numerical simulations and explore the geometries of growing and equilibrium ...

The privileged location of Santa Maria Island (Azores archipelago) in the middle of the North Atlantic makes the fossiliferous outcrops on this island of utmost importance to gain a better understanding of how coeval living communities relate to the broader evolutionary and biogeographic history of the Atlantic basin during the late Neogene and the Quaternary. Here we focus on this island's MIS 5e fossil record, offering a comprehensive review on the palaeobiodiversity, palaeoecology and palaeobiogeography ...

Ischaemic stroke is a severe complication of rheumatic heart disease (RHD), which may result in permanent disability and death. This study aimed to assess the incidence and predictors of stroke in patients with RHD in the current era of evidence-based recommendations for prevention.Consecutive patients with RHD diagnosed by clinical and echocardiographic criteria were selected. A structured clinical and neurological assessment was performed to determine the aetiology and classification of stroke ...

Background: The 2012 World Heart Federation Criteria are the current gold standard for the diagnosis of latent rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Because data and experience using these criteria have grown, there is opportunity to simplify and develop outcome prediction tools. We aimed to develop a simple echocardiographic score applicable for RHD screening with potential to predict disease progression. Methods: This study included 3 cohorts used for score derivation (n=9501), score validation (n=7312), ...

The evolution of the total ozone measured by a network of ground stations located in Argentina and Chile between latitudes 53S and 33S during the spring of 1993, 1994 and 1995 is given. Ozone data obtained from the ground stations are compared with total ozone values supplied by the satellite showing a very good agreement. Ground station data were taken with a very low cost detection system based on differential optical absorption techniques under specific conditions. Several ozone depletion events ...

Abstract Severe acute arterial hypertension can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. After excluding a reversible etiology, choice of therapeutic intervention should be based on evaluation of a number of factors, such as age, comorbidities, and other ongoing therapies. A rational pathophysiological approach should then be applied that integrates the effects of the drug on blood volume, vascular tone, and other determinants of cardiac output. Vasodilators, calcium channel blockers, ...

Importance of the field: Severe sepsis is characterized by relative hypotension associated with a high cardiac output, peripheral vasodilation, and organ dysfunction. The renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) is primarily activated to increase blood pressure, but recently potential pro-inflammatory effects of angiotensin II have attracted interest because of the reported association between angiotensin II levels and organ failure and mortality in sepsis. RAAS antagonists could represent a new ...

Mechanistic studies show that nitroaryl ethers (3-nitroanisole, 3-nitrophenetole, n-butyl 3-nitrophenyl ether, 2-chloro-5-nitroanisole, 2-bromo-5-nitroanisole and 3,5-dinitro anisole) undergo nucleophilic aromatic photosubstitution with hydroxide ions through an SN23Ar* mechanism. An investigation of the quenching of exited states of nitroanyl ethers by bromide and thiosulfate ions in aqueous solutions is reported and lends support to the proposed SN23Ar* mechanism.

In human bronchiectasis, the bronchial wall is the seat of abnormal mononuclear cell infiltration, which suggests the presence of a cell-mediated immune reaction. The histopathology of a recently devised animal model of experimental bronchiectasis resembles that of the human disease. Inflammation associated with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is influenced by gene polymorphisms and inflammatory cytokines. There are currently no immunologic and genetic markers to discriminate latent versus clinical patients, critical to predict disease evolution. Employing machine-learning, we searched for predictors that could discriminate latent versus clinical RHD, and eventually identify latent patients that may progress to clinical disease. A total of 212 individuals were included, 77 with ...
