This paper proposes an immune-inspired algorithm to the problem of minimising the makespan on unrelated parallel machines, with sequence dependent setup times. The initial population is generated through the construction phase of the Greedy Randomised Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP). An evaluation function is proposed to help the algorithm escape from local optima. A Variable Neighbourhood Descent (VND) local search heuristic, which makes significant use of the characteristics of the problem, is ...

Little information is available on the effects of resistance training on the aortic wall. This study aimed to quantify the effects of a resistance-training program on blood pressure and aortic wall structural components. Rats (aged three months) were randomized into sedentary group (control group, CG; n = 10) or trained group (TG; n = 10). The TG rats performed resistance training by climbing a 1.1-m vertical ladder (80° incline) five times a week for 12 weeks, and the CG remained sedentary. The rats were ...

Autism spectrum disorder ( ASD ) results from interactions of genetic and environmental factors. The MET proto‐oncogene has been identified as a candidate gene for autism susceptibility, and is implicated in neurodevelopment and social brain circuitry. Here, we describe the first case of a familial mutation of MET , consisting of an interstitial genomic deletion removing exons 12 through 15, causing a frameshift and premature stop codon, with evidence of nonsense‐mediated mRNA decay. On the other allele, ...

The SARS-CoV-2 global pandemic will disproportionately impact countries with weak economies and vulnerable populations including people with dementia. Latin American and Caribbean countries (LACs) are burdened with unstable economic development, fragile health systems, massive economic disparities, and a high prevalence of dementia. Here, we underscore the selective impact of SARS-CoV-2 on dementia among LACs, the specific strain on health systems devoted to dementia, and the subsequent effect of ...

This paper addresses the total weighted tardiness minimization problem on unrelated parallel machines with sequence dependent setup times and job ready times. The problem consists in scheduling a set of jobs reducing the penalty costs caused by the delays in the job due dates. This is a NP-Hard problem and has been extensively studied in recent literature. In order to solve this, an ILS-VND hybrid metaheuristic is proposed, where a local search heuristic Variable Neighborhood Descent (VND) is integrated ...

Minimization of stress during the transportation of live fish is essential in maintaining the welfare and performance of the animals. In order to test the hypothesis that stress during transport of fingerlings of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) can be reduced with the aid of the anesthetics menthol, eugenol or benzocaine, we have assessed the effects of these agents at various concentrations on the physiological parameters and survival rates of fish subjected to conditions simulating those normally ...

We studied infection by Trypanosomatidae in bats captured in two areas with different degradation levels in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro state: Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA) and Estação Fiocruz Mata Atlântica (EFMA). Furthermore, we evaluated whether the diversity of trypanosomatids changes according to bat diversity and the different levels of preservation in the region. The results showed no influence of the level of preservation on bat species richness (15 and 14 species, respectively), ...

Nano-TiO2 powders are widely used in sunscreen lotions as UV filters in combination with other substances. The activation of TiO2 by UV rays leads to the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS, e.g., hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen) which are potentially harmful. For this reason the TiO2 particles are generally coated with inert materials (e.g., silica or alumina) that inhibit such reactivity. Alternatively, the release of ROS may be inhibited by introducing in the TiO2 lattice doping elements. ...

The indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides increasingly harms the health of living beings and the environment. Thus, biological control carried out by microorganisms has gained prominence, since it consists of an environmentally friendly alternative to the use of pesticides for controlling plant diseases. Herein, we evaluated the potential role of endophytic Trichoderma strains isolated from forest species of the Cerrado-Caatinga ecotone as biological control agents of crop pathogenic fungi. ...

This study analyzes trends in the migration of childbirth from rural areas of Sergipe State, Brazil, to the capital city, Aracaju, from 1970 to 1996. Data on "mother's place of residence" were obtained from mothers whose children were born in maternity hospitals in Aracaju in 1970, 1976, 1986, and 1996. Significant differences occurred in the proportion of mothers who resided outside of Aracaju but came there to give birth, especially from 1976 to 1986. This shift was stimulated by improvement of ...

Physical stimuli are crucial for the structural and functional maturation of tissues both in vivo and in vitro. In tissue engineering applications, bioreactors have become fundamental and effective tools for providing biomimetic culture conditions that recapitulate the native physical stimuli. In addition, bioreactors play a key role in assuring strict control, automation, and standardization in the production process of cell-based products for future clinical application. In this study, a compact, ...

Qì Gōng is a type of exercise that involves meditation and is used for health. With a background from the martial arts, it is known also as an auto healing exercise with three main elements according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): body focus (posture and movement), breathing and mind focus (meditative elements). Heart rate variability is a tool that allows us to measure the autonomic system velocity to detect and respond to unexpected stimuli. So our goal was to build a systematic review of ...

Abstract Brain clocks, which quantify discrepancies between brain age and chronological age, hold promise for understanding brain health and disease. However, the impact of diversity (including geographical, socioeconomic, sociodemographic, sex and neurodegeneration) on the brain-age gap is unknown. We analyzed datasets from 5,306 participants across 15 countries (7 Latin American and Caribbean countries (LAC) and 8 non-LAC countries). Based on higher-order interactions, we developed a brain-age gap ...
