A certain similarity between changes secondary to lack of extremity function and those of ageing has stimulated the present inquiry. The chemical changes occurring in immobility are described and compared with available information on such changes in the ageing process. A change in the gel-fibre ratio was noted to be a uniform process which occurred in all fibrous connective tissue structures of the immobilized canine knee. There was no change in total collagen to support the hypothesis that contractures ...

Eighteen healthy males received a single 300 mg oral dose of eprosartan as the commercial wet granulation formulation under fasting conditions and following a high-fat breakfast and a single 20 mg intravenous (i.v.) dose. The pharmacokinetics of i.v. eprosartan (mean±S.D.) were characterized by a low systemic plasma clearance (131.8±36.2 mL min−1) and a small steady-state volume of distribution (12.6±2.6 L). Oral bioavailability averaged 13.1%, due to incomplete absorption. In vitro dynamic flow cell ...

The photoreduction of iron hydroxides is known to exert significant influence over many biogeochemical processes in streams impacted by acid mine drainage. Using laboratory and in-stream measurements, the variation in reactivity of iron hydroxides taken from a stream receiving acid mine drainage (AMD) was studied. The reactivity decreased for material collected at sites progressively downstream from the AMD inflow. In the presence of two simple organic ligands, photoreduction increased for the fresher ...

This introductory chapter provides an overview of the life course and social network perspectives and suggests how the integration of life course and social network ideas can further the study of both. An overarching framework is presented within which the understanding of social networks can improve the understanding of the life course, and vice versa. The chapter outlines the volume's origins and organization, including summaries of the chapters in its nine sections, which begin with theoretical ...

Examination of springtime ice drafts obtained from submarine profiles in a narrow band of the western Arctic Ocean from offshore Alaska to 89°N indicates that the mean ice draft decreased 1.5 m between the mid‐1980s and early 1990s. No similar trend was evident in ice drafts near the North Pole. The 1980s drafts were composed largely of ice exceeding 3.5 m, while the early 1990s drafts contained more ice in thinner categories. The differences in drafts between the two periods appear to be related ...

Critical to managing the spread of COVID-19 is the ability to diagnose infection and define the acquired immune response across the population. While genomic tests for the novel Several Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) detect the presence of viral RNA for a limited time frame, when the virus is shed in the upper respiratory tract, tests able to define exposure and infection beyond this short window of detectable viral replication are urgently needed. Following infection, antibodies ...

An annual study of a natural wetland receiving drainage with high concentrations of iron, zinc, and manganese from an abandoned mine tunnel was conducted. During summer, the wetland reduced the mass flow from the tunnel to a receiving stream by more than 90% for iron, by 65% for zinc, and by 25% for manganese. Plant uptake accounted for less than 1% of the total retention. Zinc and manganese mass flows to the stream were greater than mass flows from the tunnel during autumn and winter, indicating ...

Lisp, one of the oldest higher-level programming languages, has rarely been used for fast numerical (floating-point) computation. We explore the benefits of Common Lisp, an emerging new language standard with some excellent implementations, for numerical computation. We compare it to Fortran in terms of the speed of efficiency of generated code, as well as the structure and convenience of the language. There are a surprising number of advantages to Lisp, especially in cases where a mixture of symbolic ...

An optimal information acquisition strategy was made increasingly apparent across three experimental trials through strategy cues and demonstration. Three primary measures of information acquisition efficiency were defined and used to assess how closely the participants in three age groups (45–50 years, 60–65 years, 75–80 years) approximated ideal solution strategy. All measures ...

Further, the MMP-9 expression in GCT primary cultures was partially abrogated ...

Abstract A general criticism of the 1996 Welfare Reform Act is that it is primarily the result of an urban political agenda, and it may hurt rather than help the rural poor. Under the new welfare system, the rural poor that are most likely to be affected are those who live in socially, economically, and spatially disadvantaged communities. More residents in these communities are likely to need TANF, clients in these communities are least likely to leave TANF by finding employment, and community ...

RNA-Sequencing (RNA-seq) is now commonly used to reveal quantitative spatiotemporal snapshots of the transcriptome, the structures of transcripts (splice variants and fusions) and landscapes of expressed mutations. However, standard approaches for library construction typically require relatively high amounts of input RNA, are labor intensive, and are time consuming. Here, we report the outcome of a systematic effort to optimize and streamline steps in strand-specific RNA-seq library construction. ...
