Dicrurids are a widespread avian family in Africa and Asia. Earlier surveys of this family in these areas have reported the presence of hematozoa and 1 species of Haemoproteus, i.e., Haemoproteus dicruri (De Mello, 1935). One species of drongo occurs in Madagascar and has not been examined previously. Blood smears collected from wild-caught crested drongos, Dicrurus forficatus, in Madagascar were examined using a compound microscope for the presence of hematozoa. A new species, Haemoproteus khani, ...

Vincent Nijman,

I tested the hypothesis that mobbing chiefly functions as a nest defence mechanism by studying the mobbing behaviour of two species of drongo (black drongo Dicrurus macrocercus and ashy drongo D. leucophaeus) towards two species of raptor in rain forest of western Java, Indonesia. It was predicted that firstly mobbing would occur more frequent and more intense during the drongo's breeding season and secondly that it would be more frequently and more intensely directed towards the nest and egg predating ...

This 12th and last part of "Type specimens of birds in the American Museum of Natural History" includes taxa in the passerine families included in volume 15 of Peters' Check-list of birds of the world (Mayr and Greenway, 1962). The original description of each name has been consulted and the currently accepted name of the taxon has been listed with reference to recent publications. The coordinates and modern names of type localities are given when found and comments on taxonomic history are provided. ...

Surprisingly, little is known about the extent of genetic structure within widely distributed and polytypic African species that are not restricted to a particular habitat type. The few studies that have been conducted suggested that speciation among African vertebrates may be intrinsically tied to habitat and the dynamic nature of biome boundaries. In the present study, we assessed the geographic structure of genetic variation across two sister‐species of drongos, the Square‐tailed Drongo ( Dicrurus ...

We describe a new species of drongo in the Square-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus ludwigii) complex using a combination of biometric and genetic data. The new species differs from previously described taxa in the Square-tailed Drongo complex by possessing a significantly heavier bill and via substantial genetic divergence (6.7%) from its sister-species D. sharpei. The new species is distributed across the gallery forests of coastal Guinea, extending to the Niger and Benue Rivers of Nigeria. We suspect that ...

Species complexes of widespread African vertebrates that include taxa distributed across different habitats are poorly understood in terms of their phylogenetic relationships, levels of genetic differentiation and diversification dynamics. The Fork‐tailed Drongo ( Dicrurus adsimilis ) species complex includes seven Afrotropical taxa with parapatric distributions, each inhabiting a particular bioregion. Various taxonomic hypotheses concerning the species limits of the Fork‐tailed Drongo have been suggested, ...

Abstract The new species Menacanthus rhipidurae is described and illustrated from three samples of lice collected from South Island fantails (Rhipidura fuliginosa fuliginosa (Sparrman, 1787)) in New Zealand. The morphological relationships of the new species are discussed, along with the taxonomic position of the host in relation to the new louse species.
