A stereoselective synthesis of selenosteroids 4 and 5 has been achieved. Starting from commercial available cholesterol 1, followed by asymmetric epoxidation, and subsequently, by stereoselective epoxide ring opening, employing a selenium nucleophilic species, the correspondent products were afforded in high yields. The compounds were being evaluated for their biological activity and as a chiral pool for asymmetric transformations.

The synthesis and antimicrobial profile of imidazolium ionic liquids containing selenium are described herein. Minimum inhibitory concentration revealed that these compounds are especially active against algae, and their activity is modulated by substituents attached to the selenium moiety as well as by the counterion.

Ants, an ecologically successful and numerically dominant group of animals, play key ecological roles as soil engineers, predators, nutrient recyclers, and regulators of plant growth and reproduction in most terrestrial ecosystems. Further, ants are widely used as bioindicators of the ecological impact of land use. We gathered information of ant species in the Atlantic Forest of South America. The ATLANTIC ANTS data set, which is part of the ATLANTIC SERIES data papers, is a compilation of ant records ...

Urban scaling theory explains the increasing returns to scale of urban wealth indicators by the per capita increase of human interactions within cities. This explanation implicitly assumes urban areas as isolated entities and ignores their interactions. Here we investigate the effects of commuting networks on the gross domestic product (GDP) of urban areas in the US and Brazil. We describe the urban GDP as the output of a production process where population, incoming commuters, and interactions between ...

Abstract A major barrier to advancing ornithology is the systemic exclusion of professionals from the Global South. A recent special feature, Advances in Neotropical Ornithology, and a shortfalls analysis therein, unintentionally followed a long-standing pattern of highlighting individuals, knowledge, and views from the Global North, while largely omitting the perspectives of people based within the Neotropics. Here, we review current strengths and opportunities in the practice of Neotropical ornithology. ...

Chloroplast differentiation and activity are highly regulated by light, and several proteins involved in these processes have been characterised. Cloud computing is a ubiquitous paradigm responsible for a fundamental change in the way distributed computing is performed. The possibility to outsource the installation, maintenance and scalability of servers, added to competitive prices, makes this platform highly attractive to the computing industry.
