Abstract Microhabitat use by three endemic Iberian cyprinids, Barbus bocagei (Steindachner), Pseudochondrostoma polylepis (Steindachner) , and Squalius pyrenaicus (Günther) was studied in terms of depth, mean water column velocity, focal height, focal velocity, distance to shore and substrate. Data were obtained by snorkelling during spring and summer at nine sites of the Tagus River Basin, Spain. Habitat suitability criteria (HSC) were calculated, including fish position and focal velocity in the water ...

The potential of Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) Ensembles to explore the ecology of freshwater fish species was tested by applying the technique to redfin barbel (Barbus haasi Mertens, 1925), an endemic and montane species that inhabits the North-East quadrant of the Iberian Peninsula. Two different MLP Ensembles were developed. The physical habitat model considered only abiotic variables, whereas the biotic model also included the density of the accompanying fish species and several invertebrate predictors. ...

Inconsistent performance of Species Distribution Models (SDMs), which may depend on several factors such as the initial conditions or the applied modelling technique, is one of the greatest challenges in ecological modelling. To overcome this problem, ensemble modelling combines the forecasts of several individual models. A commonly applied ensemble modelling technique is the Multi–Layer Perceptron (MLP) Ensemble, which was envisaged in the 1990s. However, despite its potential for ecological modelling, ...

In 4 river reaches, 19 sampling campaigns were conducted per reach spread over a period of 35 months. The biotic samples were selected in the periods with greatest flow stability. Parallel to each sampling, 37 environmental variables grouped into 3 factors (riparian corridor, hydromorphology, and water quality) were recorded. Obesity has been described as a protective factor in cardiovascular and other diseases being expressed as 'obesity paradox'. However, the impact of obesity on clinical outcomes including mortality in COVID-19 has been poorly systematically investigated until now. Abstract. Climate changes affect aquatic ecosystems by altering temperatures and precipitation patterns, and the rear edges of the distributions of cold-water species are especially sensitive to these effects. The main goal of this study was to predict in detail how changes in air temperature and precipitation will affect streamflow, the thermal habitat of a cold-water fish (the brown trout, Salmo trutta), and the synergistic relationships among these variables at the rear edge of the natural distribution ...

As a function of the dominant vegetation cover, patterns of variation in the structure and composition of both, the aquatic macroinvertebrate communities and their functional feeding groups (FFG) were examined at pristine streams of two high Andean micro-catchments of southern Ecuador. Ten sampling segments were defined in the study streams surrounded by either Tussock grass (TG), Quinua forest (QF) or high mountain forest (HMF). In each segment, environmental and biological samples were collected. ...

Juan Diego Alcaraz-HernFrancisco Martnez-Capel,
Relationships between density and biomass of Salmo trutta fario and mesohabitat variables in trout streams of the Valencian region In the year 2003, populations of Salmo trutta fario were studied in the Valencian rivers. Habitat conditions were also studied along the successive hydro-morphological units in 300 m long reaches, along with geographic and water-quality variables. With the objective of relating density and biomass with the habitat, all the independent variables were used in a stepwise ...
