The geodynamic evolution of the proto-Andean margin of Gondwana during the Paleozoic was characterized by repeated subduction processes associated with the docking of several terranes, including the Cuyania–Precordillera terrane and the Chilenia terrane, and the development of the calc–alkaline Famatinian continental magmatic arc. In the Sierra de La Huerta (30°56′–31°29′ S and 67°17′–67°32′ W), at the southwestern end of the Western Sierras Pampeanas, some mafic to ultramafic igneous bodies belonging ...

Abstract Duration discrimination within the seconds‐to‐minutes range, known as interval timing, involves the interaction of cortico‐striatal circuits via dopaminergic–glutamatergic pathways. Besides interval timing, most (if not all) organisms exhibit circadian rhythms in physiological, metabolic and behavioral functions with periods close to 24 h. We have previously reported that both circadian disruption and desynchronization impaired interval timing in mice. In this work we studied the involvement ...

Mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti, are becoming important models for studying invasion biology. We characterized genetic variation at 12 microsatellite loci in 79 populations of Ae. aegypti from 30 countries in six continents, and used them to infer historical and modern patterns of invasion. Our results support the two subspecies Ae. aegypti formosus and Ae. aegypti aegypti as genetically distinct units. Ae. aegypti aegypti populations outside Africa are derived from ancestral African populations ...

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of abdominal and general obesity on periodontal outcomes in a population-based cohort of Brazilian adults.Abdominal and general obesity were assessed in the years 2009 (n = 1,720) and 2012 (n = 1,222). For abdominal obesity, a dichotomous variable was created: 1) eutrophic/lost weight or 2) obese/gained weight. For general obesity, a categorical variable was created: 1) eutrophic/lost weight; 2) gained weight; or 3) obese. Periodontal outcomes were percentage ...

Therapeutic resistance seen in aggressive forms of breast cancer remains challenging for current treatments. More than half of the patients suffer from a disease relapse, most of them with distant metastases. Cancer maintenance, resistance to therapy, and metastatic disease seem to be sustained by the presence of cancer stem cells (CSC) within a tumor. The difficulty in targeting this subpopulation derives from their dynamic interconversion process, where CSC can differentiate to non-CSC, which in ...

The major tenets in accurately assessing tumor size in patients with early stage cervical cancer currently include physical examination, imaging studies, and pathologic evaluation. It is estimated that when comparing clinical stage based on physical examination and final pathology, the concordance diminishes as stage increases: 85.4%, 77.4%, 35.3%, and 20.5% for stage IB1, IB2, IIA, and IIB, respectively. Vaginal involvement and larger tumor diameter are considered the main causes of stage inaccuracy. ...

Recently the revised 2018 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging system for cervical cancer was published. In this most recent classification, imaging modalities and pathologic information have been added as tools to determine the final stage of the disease. The outbreak of COVID-19 posed the issue of urgently identifying treatment strategies. Colchicine was considered for this purpose based on well-recognised anti-inflammatory effects and potential antiviral properties. In the present study, colchicine was proposed to patients with COVID-19, and its effects compared with 'standard-of-care' (SoC).In the public hospital of Esine, northern Italy, 140 consecutive inpatients, with virologically and radiographically confirmed COVID-19 admitted in the period ...

Southern Volcanic Zone (SVZ) hosts numerous thermal springs (25–85 °C), related to Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault System (LOFS) and Andean Transverse Faults (ATFs), suggesting the feasibility of low- to high-enthalpy geothermal exploitation. However, the local understanding of processes and factors controlling the high-temperature groundwater circulation remained undefined, which limits its exploitation. Following a brief review of SVZ, we address the previous issue by a hydrogeochemical and isotopic analysis of ...

A new series of 2,6,9-trisubstituted adenines (5–14) have been prepared and evaluated in radioligand binding studies for their affinity at the human A1, A2A and A3 adenosine receptors and in adenylyl cyclase experiments for their potency at the human A2B subtype. From this preliminary study the conclusion can be drawn that introduction of bulky chains at the N 6 position of 9-propyladenine significantly increased binding affinity at the human A1 and A3 adenosine receptors, while the presence of a ...

In this article, we present a theoretical study of global and local charge transfer (CT) descriptors applied to a redox reaction and to a formation reaction, i.e., the interaction between cobalt phthalocyanine and 2-mercaptoethanol and the interaction between cobalt phthalocyanine and pyridine, respectively. Global and local properties profiles were built up along a reaction coordinate defined between the atoms directly involved in each reaction. Two regions along the reaction coordinate were found ...

Galeras, a 4270‐m high andesitic stratovolcano in southwestern Colombia near the Ecuadorian border (Figure 1), gradually reawoke in 1988 after more than 40 years of dormancy. In 1991, after a request from the Geological Survey of Colombia (INGEOMIAS) and the National Disaster Prevention Office (ONAD), Galeras was named a “Decade Volcano” by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) as part of the United Nations' International Decade for Natural Disaster ...

The prospect of eliminating malaria is challenged by emerging insecticide resistance and vectors with outdoor and/or crepuscular activity. Ivermectin can simultaneously tackle these issues by killing mosquitoes feeding on treated animals and humans. A single oral dose, however, confers only short-lived mosquitocidal plasma levels. Three different slow-release formulations of ivermectin were screened for their capacity to sustain mosquito-killing levels of ivermectin for months. Thirty rabbits received ...

Abstract The Kuroshio Current carries a large amount of nutrients in dark subsurface layer along the southern coast of Japan. However, due to lack of sufficient multidisciplinary high‐resolution observations, it has been unclear whether and how the subsurface nutrients are injected to sunlit layers on the continental shelf. In this study, using a state‐of‐the‐art tow‐yo microstructure profiler and nitrate measurements, we show that the Kuroshio flowing on the shelfbreak induces very strong turbulent ...

Following the active ageing model based on the Health, Lifelong Learning, Participation and Security pillars, this research has a twofold objective: i) to classify older adults according to active ageing profiles, taking into account the four pillars, and ii) to ascertain the relationship between the profiles and personal and contextual factors, as well as well-being and quality of life in old age.

Abstract Understanding the relationship between crustal faults and volcanic activity in transpressional environments is a main goal in geosciences and could help to understand geothermal resources and evaluate geological hazards. In the Andean Southern Volcanic Zone (SVZ), Chile, recorded seismicity is scarce, and few studies have evaluated the relationship between volcanic activity and crustal faults from seismic observations. Thus, in this study, we deployed a seismic network for almost 1 year ...

Two quantum chemistry theoretical models in the gas phase at the density functional theory B3LYP/LACVP(d) level of calculation are proposed to rationalize the hydrazine oxidation by cobalt(II) phthalocyanine (Co(II)Pc). This oxidation reaction involves the net transfer of four electrons. These theoretical models that are described in terms of energy profiles include a through-space mechanism for the transfer of the first electron of the hydrazine and a through-bond mechanism proposed for the transfer ...
