We present experimental results of the effect of the hopper angle on the clogging of grains discharged from a two-dimensional silo under gravity action. We observe that the probability of clogging can be reduced by three orders of magnitude by increasing the hopper angle. In addition, we find that for very large hopper angles, the avalanche size ($\ensuremath{\langle}s\ensuremath{\rangle}$) grows with the outlet size ($D$) stepwise, in contrast to the case of a flat-bottom silo for which $\ensuremath{\ ...

Abstract We have carried out rock magnetic characterizations of different lithofacies along the stratigraphic well Saltarín 1A, in order to learn about the various diagenetic events that could have affected the Miocene sequence of the Llanos foreland basin (Colombia). Thermomagnetic and low-temperature susceptibility measurements performed on some selected samples were complemented with analyses of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and isothermal remanent magnetization ( ...

Endothelial function depends on the equilibrium in the synthesis of vasoactive endothelial factors. It is well known that endothelin and nitric oxide (NO) exhibit reciprocal regulation. We assessed the ability of NO to regulate endothelin-converting enzyme-1 (ECE-1) expression in vascular endothelial cells.Bovine aortic endothelial cells were incubated with 2 different NO donors as well as with a cyclic-GMP analog, dibutyryl-cGMP (dB-cGMP). ECE-1 protein content and mRNA expression were evaluated by ...

In this study, ten-minute meteorological data-sets recorded at Burgos, Spain, are used to develop models of Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR) following two different procedures: multilinear regression and Artificial Neural Networks. Ten Meteorological Indices (MIs) are chosen as inputs to the models: clearness index (kt), diffuse fraction (kd), direct fraction (kb), Perez's clear sky index (ɛ), brightness index (Δ), cloud cover (CC), air temperature (T), pressure (P), solar azimuth cosine (cosZ), and horizontal ...

Furfural comes from lignocellulosic biomass that, together with its derived products, has many useful applications in several industries. Furfural is usually obtained via pentose dehydration using a biphasic reactor to extract furfural in situ from its reaction medium. However, the conventional solvents used so far, mainly toluene and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), are harmful to health and the environment. Therefore, hydrophobic natural solvents have been successfully tested in this work to improve ...

Abstract Uraemic toxins increase in serum parallel to a decline in the glomerular filtration rate and the development of sarcopenia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study analyses the role of uraemic toxins in sarcopenia at different stages of CKD, evaluating changes in the muscular regeneration process. Cultured C 2 C 12 cells were incubated with a combination of indoxyl sulphate and p-cresol at high doses (100 µg/mL) or low doses (25 µg/mL and 10 µg/mL) resembling late or early ...

To analyse the ability of TWEAK to modify the endothelin system, particularly endothelin-1 (ET-1) and endothelin-converting enzyme-1 (ECE-1), studying the intracellular mechanisms implied. TNF-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) is a member of TNF superfamily; it has different biological functions such as inflammation, angiogenesis, proliferation, and apoptosis. TWEAK and fibroblast growth-factor-inducible 14 are expressed in different cell types, including endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Despite ...

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is a group of lysosomal storage diseases (LSD), characterized by the deficiency of a lysosomal enzyme responsible for the degradation of glycosaminoglycans (GAG). This deficiency leads to the lysosomal accumulation of partially degraded GAG. Nevertheless, deficiency of a single lysosomal enzyme has been associated with impairment in other cell mechanism, such as apoptosis and redox balance. Although GAG analysis represents the main biomarker for MPS diagnosis, it has several ...

Despite the presence of vitamin D receptor (VDR) in endothelial cells, the effect of vitamin D on endothelial function is unknown. An unbalanced production of vasoactive endothelial factors such as nitric oxide (NO) or endothelin-1 (ET-1) results in endothelial dysfunction, which can alter the normal cardiovascular function. Present experiments were devoted to assess the effect of active vitamin D (calcitriol) on the synthesis of endothelial vasoactive factors. The results were that, in cells, calcitriol ...

This paper studies the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on US economic growth using a dynamic general equilibrium approach. A production function with six different capital inputs is used, three of them corresponding to ICT assets and the other three to non-ICT assets. The technological change embedded in hardware equipment is found to be the main leading non-neutral force in US productivity growth, accounting for about one quarter of total growth during the period 1980– ...

The aim of our study was to analyze the relationships between atherosclerosis and endothelin-converting enzyme-1 (ECE-1). Four-week-old C57BL/6J [wild-type (WT)] and apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE) mice were fed with a standard or Western-type fat diet for 8 wks. ApoE showed atherosclerotic lesions in the aorta, higher blood pressure and vascular lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1) protein content than WT. ApoE showed a significant increase in ECE-1 protein content and mRNA ...

This paper studies the impact of the information and communication technologies (ICT) on economic growth in Spain using a dynamic general equilibrium approach. Contrary to previous works, we use a production function with six different capital inputs, three of them corresponding to ICT assets. Calibration of the model suggests that the contribution of ICT to Spanish productivity growth is very relevant, whereas the contribution of non-ICT capital has been even negative. Additionally, over the sample ...

Management and orchestration of virtual resources and functions, commonly referred to as MANO, are key functionalities of NFV environments. This article describes the design and deployment of the NFV MANO platform of 5TONIC, the open research and innovation laboratory on 5G technologies founded by Telefonica and IMDEA Networks. This NFV MANO platform provides 5TONIC trials and experiments with access to a functional production-like NFV environment, enabling experimentation with novel NFV products ...

Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA) is a lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations in the gene encoding for the enzyme N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase (GALNS), leading to lysosomal accumulation of keratan sulfate (KS) and chondroitin-6-sulfate. In this study, we identified and characterized bromocriptine (BC) as a novel PC for MPS IVA. BC was identified through virtual screening and predicted to be docked within the active cavity of GALNS in a similar conformation to that observed for ...

Primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) are a group of around 300 rare and usually monogenic disorders, mostly caused by point mutations.1 Uniparental disomy (UPD) is a condition in which both copies of a chromosome or chromosomal region are inherited from the same progenitor.2 Uniparental isodisomy (UPID) is a type of UPD caused by nondisjunction errors in one of the parental gametes in meiosis II. UPID can be pathogenic, either because of imprinting defects or inheritance of a recessive condition from ...

Abstract Renal fibrosis and anaemia are two of the most relevant events in chronic kidney disease. Fibrosis is characterized by the accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins in the glomeruli and tubular interstitium. Anaemia is the consequence of a decrease in erythropoietin production in fibrotic kidneys. This work analyses the possibility that the accumulation of abnormal collagens in kidney interstitium could be one of the mechanisms responsible for erythropoietin decreased synthesis. In ...
