Abstract An improved method to generate 1,2‐cyclohexadienes by fluoride‐induced β‐elimination of 6‐(trimethylsilyl)cyclohexenyl triflates is presented. This method allows the generation of these highly strained cyclic allenes in good yields and under mild reaction conditions, as demonstrated by trapping experiments based on cycloaddition reactions. We explored peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor‐γ co‐activator 1α gene (PPARGC1A), peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor‐γ gene (PPARG), and transcription factor A mitochondrial gene ( Tfam ) promoter DNA methylation in newborns between both extremes of abnormal fetal growth: Small (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) in relation to the mother's characteristics. We further sought for the association of rs9930506 variant at FTO gene and the promoter patterns of DNA methylation in the aforementioned ...

Current state of the art to determine the viability of animal cell suspension cultures is based on sampling and subsequent counting using specific staining assays. We demonstrate for the first time a noninvasive in situ imaging cytometry capable of determining the statistics of a morphologic transition during cell death in suspension cultures. To this end, we measure morphometric inhomogeneity--defined as information entropy--in cell in situ micrographs. We found that the cells are partitioned into ...

It has been suggested that DM may reduce survival of patients with liver cirrhosis (LC). Nevertheless only few prospective studies assessing the impact of DM on mortality of cirrhotic patients have been published, none in compensated LC.(i) to study the impact of DM on mortality and (ii) to identify predictors of death.Patients with compensated LC with and without DM were studied. Survival was analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier Method. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to determine independent ...

Grand-canonical like descriptions of many electron atomic and molecular open systems which are characterized by a non-integer number of electrons are presented. Their associated reduced density matrices (RDMs) are obtained by introducing the contracting mapping for this type of distributions. It is shown that there is loss of information when connecting RDMs of different order by partial contractions. The energy convexity property of these systems simplifies the description. Consequently, this formulation ...

Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) and nutrition tables are the most used front-of-pack (FOP) nutrition labeling schemes in the world; however, they are hard to process considering the nutritional knowledge, effort, and time needed for interpretation. Consumers spend little time and effort evaluating food products. Consumers are selective, and FOP nutrition labeling schemes should be too. Recent studies have shown that warning messages—a new FOP nutrition labeling scheme—improves consumers’ ability to correctly ...

Abstract Objective Alzheimer’s disease is a major health problem in our society. To date, pharmacological treatments have obtained poor results and there is a growing interest in finding non-pharmacological interventions for this disease. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique that is able to induce changes in brain activity and long-term modifications in impaired neural networks, becoming a promising clinical intervention. Our goal is to study the benefit of individualized ...

Supercritical anti-solvent precipitation (SAS) using carbon dioxide is a novel technique that can be used to produce powdered ingredients in small size particles, facilitating their incorporation into food matrices. In this work, the SAS precipitation of a licorice root ethanolic extract was studied. SAS assays were carried out at 15–20 MPa, 308.15 and 313.15 K, and two different concentrations (9.6 and 14.2 mg/ml) of the ethanolic licorice extract. In the range of conditions investigated, SAS pressure ...

Assessing the body composition of children and adolescents is important to monitor their health status. Anthropometric measurements are feasible and less-expensive than other techniques for body composition assessment. This study aimed to systematically map anthropometric equations to predict adipose tissue, body fat, or density in children and adolescents, and to analyze methodological aspects of the development of anthropometric equations using skinfolds. A scoping review was carried out following ...

BackgroundTwo of the key parameters to be monitored during cellcultivation processes are cell concentration and viability.Until today, this is very often done off-line by sterilesampling and subsequent counting using a hemocyt-ometer or an electronic cell counter. Cell biology lacks ameasurable quantity by which single cells in suspensioncan be non-invasively diagnosed as dead or alive. How-ever, it would be of significance for process monitoringand in the light of initiatives like PAT if cell density ...

METHODS: Three hundred and sixty-two Stage III consecutive cases were analyzed based on quartiles: lymph node ratio 1 (>0 and 0.12 and <0.25); lymph node ratio 4 (≥0.25). RESULTS: Disease-free survival rates were: lymph node ratio 1, 75.5%; lymph node ratio 2, 74.2%; lymph node ratio 3, 73.2%; and lymph node ratio 4, 40.1%. Similar differences were observed ...

During the 80s and 90s in Mexico there was a boost in participatory strategies developed, in order to solve serious deficiencies in community development programmes and projects. The mere existence of such methodologies, per se, does not guarantee the conscious and voluntary participation of rural inhabitants. The social energy mobilisation of the rural communities poses a great demand on those who monitor or implement participatory strategies: they have to take into consideration, among others, ...

BACKGROUND: Bovine bone matrix is a natural material that has been used in the treatment of bone lesions. In this study, bovine bone matrix Nukbone® (NKB) was investigated due its osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties. This biomaterial induces CBFA-1 activation and osteogenic differentiation, although the cytokines involved in these processes is still unknown. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to determine the influence of NKB on the pro-osteoblastic and anti-osteoblastic cytokines secretion ...
