This study investigates the effect of three-dimensional fiber reinforcement on the out-of-plane thermal conductivity of composite materials. Composite preforms 3D orthogonally woven with pitch carbon yarns and plied copper wires in thickness direction. After infusion, using a vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding process, the measured out-of-plane thermal conductivities of the resultant composites showed significant increase compared to a typical laminated uniaxially or biaxially reinforced composite. ...

Interest in nanostructures, artificial compartments and smart materials is steadily increasing as a result of beneficial applications in sensors, tissue engineering, nanoreactors and drug delivery systems. Block copolymers, peptide-based hybrid materials, expressed protein-like copolymers, and peptides that self-assemble in aqueous solution fulfill the demands of such applications while providing maximum biocompatibility. Herein, we focus on the formation of self-assembled particles using an amphiphilic ...

Abstract Cell-based immunotherapy in settings of allogeneic stem cell transplantation or donor leukocyte infusion has curative potential, especially in hematologic malignancies. However, this approach is severely restricted due to graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). This limitation may be overcome if target antigens are molecularly defined and effector cells are specifically selected. We chose formin-related protein in leukocytes 1 (FMNL1) as a target antigen after intensive investigation of its expression ...

Multinational companies (MNCs) can play an important role in poverty alleviation. The international business literature, however, lacks theoretical insight and systematic empirical evidence of MNCs entering low-income markets. Therefore, this study sheds light on the questions: How MNCs enter low-income markets? How MNCs operate? And how they gain knowledge in these markets? Using a multiple case study approach, we analyze MNCs with business activities in low-income markets by taking recourse to ...

Three porphyrin−fullerene dyads, in which a diyne bridge links C60 with a β-position on a tetraarylporphyrin, have been synthesized. The free-base dyad was prepared, as well as the corresponding Zn(II) and Ni(II) materials. These represent the first examples of a new class of conjugatively linked electron donor−acceptor systems in which π-conjugation extends from the porphyrin ring system directly to the fullerene surface. The processes that occur following photoexcitation of these dyads were examined ...

The system allows vacuum pressure being applied to the injection bucket to generate a computer-controlled vacuum differential between the injection and vent gate. A fuzzy-logic controller has been implemented in LabVIEW and the system has been optimized using virtual simulation. A parametric study shows the performance of the control system as a function of process and material parameters. ...

ABSTRACT In this paper we analyze whether cross‐sector partnerships enable companies to respond to the specific conditions at the base of the pyramid (BOP). We develop three hypotheses in which we argue how cross‐sector partnerships support companies to face unfamiliar conditions in these markets. We test the developed hypotheses against the data of 103 companies operating in BOP‐markets. The results show that companies rely on organizations from the civil society sector in order to meet customer ...
