The most severe form of congenital hyperinsulinism (HI) is caused by inactivating mutations in the genes encoding the ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels. In KATPHI, loss of functional channels results in inappropriate insulin responses to glucose. Thus, there is a failure to suppress insulin secretion when glucose levels fall, but there is also a blunting of glucose-stimulated insulin release. There are three distinct subtypes of diffuse KATPHI: (1) recessive (biallelic) diazoxide-unresponsive; ( ...

A luminescent purple glow expands, refracting holographic light in the background. As the perspective shifts, each color of the rainbow appears and disappears along multiple axes of a prismatic spray. Our Diva, Carolyn Ellis, sits alone on a stool in the midst of the purple glow, extending her hand, palm up, with outstretched tapered fingers, beckoning us to join her. “Don’t be afraid,” she smiles, “we are all the same.”

The expanding aquaculture industry continues to encounter major challenges from highly contagious viruses. Control and eradication measures for lethal and economically damaging notifiable viral diseases involve 'stamping out' policies and surveillance strategies. Mass-culling of stock and restricted movement of fish and fish products, used to control the spread of notifiable diseases, has considerable impacts on the trade of fish products. Although effective, these measures are expensive and ethically ...

Visual similarity plays an important role in many computer vision applications. Deep metric learning (DML) is a powerful framework for learning such similarities which not only generalize from training data to identically distributed test distributions, but in particular also translate to unknown test classes. However, its prevailing learning paradigm is class-discriminative supervised training, which typically results in representations specialized in separating training classes. For effective generalization, ...

The CAPE ESO interface of the process simulator gPROMS is used to pass model information to numerical methods contained in the simulation environment DIVA. By the interface, algorithms for the continuation of stable and unstable steady state and periodic solutions can be applied directly to gPROMS models. The use of the interface is illustrated by a detailed nonlinear model of an industrial reactive distillation column.

With the development of modern informational communication systems, voice control interface and speech recognition systems find application in various fields of activity. One application of such systems is for people with special needs who have speech impairments, and thus find using speech-dependent voice interfaces challenging. Our research team is developing a speaker dependent computer system «Deep Interactive Voice Assistant» (DIVA), which allows recognizing an arbitrary set of commands to control ...

This paper introduces the Diva (Document Image Viewer with Ajax) project. Diva is a multi-page image viewer, designed for web-based digital libraries to present documents in a web browser. Key features of Diva include: "lazily loading" only the parts of the document the user is viewing, the ability to "zoom" in and out for viewing high-resolution page images, support for Pyramid TIFF or multi-resolution JPEG 2000 images, a multi-page "grid" view for page images, and HTML5 canvas support for document ...

The development of instructional content using new Information Technologies is an expensive, time-consuming and complex process that points to the establishment of new methodologies. It was in this context that the concept of Learning Objects (LOs) was proposed as an approach that promotes content reuse. However, if content is conveyed in small LOs, they must be combined and sequenced in order to build more elaborated and complex content. This paper presents a strategy to deal with this problem based ...

The DIVA (Directions Into Velocities of Articulators) model is an adaptive neural network model that is used to control the movement of the analog vocal tract to generate words, syllables, or phonemes. The input signal to the DIVA model is the EEG (electroencephalogram) signal acquired from the human brain. However, due to the influence of power frequency interference and other forms of noise, the input signal can be non-stationary and can also contain a variety of multi-form waveforms in its instantaneous ...
