M. Grech, Scott Cheadle, Don C. Lawton,

Two of the most active areas of current geophysical research and development involve depth imaging and velocity anisotropy. This is fitting, given that the potential benefits of the former may be fully realized only if the latter is appropriately taken into account. It is well established that depth images depend on the accuracy of the velocity model (Zhu et al., 1998; Parkes and Hatton, 1987). If anisotropy is present and not accounted for in velocity model building and migration, the final image ...

An industrial laminate, Phenolic CE, is shown to possess seismic anisotropy. This material is composed of laminated sheets of canvas fabric, with an approximately orthogonal weave of fibers, bonded with phenolic resin. It is currently being used in scaled physical modeling studies of anisotropic media at The University of Calgary. Ultrasonic transmission experiments using this material show a directional variation of compressional‐ and shear‐wave velocities and distinct shear‐wave birefringence, ...

In this paper we report further results of scaled physical modelling experiments in the laboratory in which ultrasonic elastic waves are propagated through an anisotropic medium of orthorhombic symmetry. Whereas our earlier experiments consisted for the most part in sending and receiving on opposite faces of a small cube of phenolic laminate, these new results are from multioffset profiles run parallel and at 45° to principal directions on a larger slab of phenolic. Teachers at a, mostly white, independent school met monthly for a year, discussing how to talk with children from pre-K through eighth grade about race. They looked at interactions that arose spontaneously in the classroom, from younger children’s comments about skin color to racially tinged remarks in the older classes. Faculty members, who all identify as white, became aware of their own wish to avoid these conversations, since many of them had not looked at their own relationships to being white ...
