Abstract Microbially mediated carbonates form in numerous environments and produce a range of lithologic fabrics and textures. While the environmental and biological factors controlling microbial carbonate precipitation are becoming more established, the influence of precursor microbial textures on diagenetic processes is less understood. Here we describe microbial oncolites from Mare, New Caledonia, to assess their formation, textures, and subsequent diagenetic alteration. Calcified filaments and ...

Didemnum sp.A is a colonial ascidian with rapidly expanding populations on the east and west coasts of North America. The origin of Didemum sp.A is unknown.Populations were first observed on the northeast coast of the U.S. in the late 1980s and on the west coast during the 1990s.It is currently undergoing a massive population explosion and is now a dominant member of many subtidal communities on both coasts. To determine Didemnum sp.A's current distribution, we conducted surveys from Maine to Virginia ...

Apolipoprotein E (apoE), particularly the e4 allele, is genetically linked to the incidence of Alzheimer' disease. In vitro, apoE has been shown to bind β-amyloid (Aβ), an amyloidogenic peptide that aggregates to form the primary component of senile plaques. In previous work, we demonstrated that apoE3 from tissue culture medium binds to Aβ with greater avidity than apoE4 (LaDu, M. J., Falduto, M. T., Manelli, A. M., Reardon, C. A., Getz, G. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) are found in dental pulp secondary to carious exposures, periodontal disease, or trauma. Lysosomal degranulation of these cells liberates cellular proteases, including elastase (PMN-E) and cathepsin-G (PMN-CG), which produce connective tissue degradation. However, nonspecific pulpal tissue destruction can be modified by a naturally occurring serum protease inhibitor α 2 -macroglobulin (A 2 -M). This study relates the concentrations of human PMN-E, PMN-CG, and A 2 -M ...

In previous work we examined the changes in surface topography of sodium trisilicate glass (Na2O⋅3SiO2) with exposure to pulsed 248-nm excimer laser light at fluences of 2.6–5 J/cm2 (per laser pulse), as well as the character of the products emitted from the glass surface (e.g., ± ions, electrons, ground state and excited neutral atoms and molecules). At fluences above a threshold, ablative etching occurs only after a number of preliminary laser pulses. In this work, we show a dramatic synergism in the ...

Soda lime silicate galss was leached in D182O at 25, 50, and 90°C up to 500 h and was examined using non-resonant nuclear reaction and Rutherford Backscattering analysis. Replacement of sodium by deuterium (D/Na = 2.3 ±0.5) was consistent with earlier results, which have been cited as support for an ion-interdiffusion leaching mechanism. However, uptake of 18O was in excess of D (18O/D = 1.6±0.3), with 18O penetrating to depths as great as those from which Na was extracted. Results indicate extensive hydrolysis ...

Hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes are not only the major risk factors for stroke, but they tend to cluster in families. It is unknown, however, whether these conditions occur more frequently among relatives of patients with specific types of stroke as compared to non-relatives. The frequencies of stroke and its major risk factors in two groups of subjects were compared. One group consisted of 76 siblings of 41 patients hospitalized with cerebral infarction and transient ischemic attacks ...

Self-pumped phase conjugation has been observed at selected laser wavelengths over the range 647–780 nm. Phase-conjugate reflectivities as great as 20% were measured for power levels ranging from 2 to 100 mW. In addition, phase-conjugate and beam-fanning response times were also measured. Our observations were carried out in crystals belonging to the tungsten-bronze family; these crystals were doped with cerium at the 9-fold coordinated lattice sites to give a red photorefractive response.

This chapter discusses physics and applications of Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor (MIS). The basic structure of MIS diode has been shown. The surface states as well as differences in the work functions between metal and semiconductor have secondary significance in high-frequency applications, and, therefore, have been taken into account. The chapter considers the range over which MIS varactors may be driven and the surface effects have been treated in enough detail to at least estimate and put limits ...

Abstract Microbial carbonate mud in the modern (<4 kyr) palustrine environment of the Florida Everglades is surprisingly susceptible to early diagenetic alteration. The low‐Mg calcite crystals show an open, trellis‐like crystal structure that yields a high surface area to volume ratio. This textural complexity, likely to be a result of organic influence, leads to abundant reaction sites vulnerable to both dissolution and subsequent precipitation. Rapid degradation of organics is attributed to both ...

The enhancement of the electron beam sensitivity of PMMA from 10−5 C/Cm2 to the 10−6 C/cm2 range has been achieved by incorporation of 15 mol % methacrylic anhydride (MAN) groups into the polymer chain. The MAN group is introduced by cyclization of a copolymer of PMMA–MA (poly methyl methacrylate–methacrylic acid) into a terpolymer of PMMA–MA–MAN of 70/15/15 mol % composition. The terpolymer retains all of the exemplary properties of PMMA; high resolution, excellent adhesion, ease of processing and process ...
