In Brief Objectives: Population-level data on prevalence and distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) types in the United States are necessary to guide optimal vaccination strategies. Study: Urine specimens from 3262 women ages 18 to 25 in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Wave III) were tested and typed for HPV. Poststratification sampling weights generated nationally representative estimates. Results: Overall HPV prevalence was 26.9% and as high as 14.3% among women with 1 ...

Abstract Background Characterization of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) has been integrated into clinical practice. Although labs have standardized validation procedures to develop single locus tests, the efficacy of on-site plasma-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) assays still needs to be proved. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, we profiled DNA from matched tissue and plasma samples from 75 patients with cancer. We applied an NGS test that detects clinically relevant alterations ...

SUMMARY A detection, viability, and infectivity assay was developed for Cryptosporidiurn parvum. Oocysts or excysted sporozoites were inoculated onto monolayers of CaCo‐2 cells grown on chamber slides. C. parvum infection was monitored by three methods: a) application of a fluorescein‐labeled anti‐sporozoite antibody; b) PCR of a heat‐shock protein gene fragment; and c) detection of mRNA from the heat‐shock protein gene by RT‐PCR.

Members of the epidermal growth factor family of receptors have long been implicated in the pathogenesis of various tumors, and more recently, apparent roles in the developing heart and nervous system have been described. Numerous ligands that activate these receptors have been isolated. We report here on the cloning and initial characterization of a second ligand for the erbB family of receptors. This factor, which we have termed Don-1 (divergent of neuregulin 1), has structural similarity with ...

The presence of Cryptosporidium in drinking water supplies is a significant problem faced by the water industry. Although a variety of methods exist for the detection of waterborne oocysts, water utilities currently have no way of assessing the infectivity of detected oocysts and consequently are unable to accurately determine the risks posed to public health by waterborne Cryptosporidium. In this paper, the development of an infectivity assay for waterborne Cryptosporidium parvum is described. ...

Purpose Standard frontline treatment of patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma currently includes sunitinib. A barrier to long-term treatment with sunitinib includes the development of significant adverse effects, including diarrhea, hand-foot syndrome (HFS), and fatigue. This trial assessed the effect of an alternate 2 weeks on, 1 week off (2/1) schedule of sunitinib on toxicity and efficacy in previously untreated patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. The use of over-the-counter botanical estrogens containing isolated soy isoflavones, including genistein and daidzein, has become a popular alternative to traditional hormone therapies. Menopausal women use these products as an aide in healthy aging, including for the maintenance of cognitive function. The safety and efficacy of many of these commercial preparations remain unknown. Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels fulfill important and diverse signaling functions, and are generally conserved among species. The canonical subfamily of TRP proteins, TRPC channels, possesses 7 isoforms that combine in various ways to form heteromultimers. In endothelium, TRPC1 and TRPC4 form subunits of a channel that selectively conducts calcium. This channel is activated by calcium depletion in the endoplasmic reticulum, and thus TRPC1/TRPC4 forms the molecular basis of a store operated ...

Resveratrol (RESV) is a polyphenol with pleiotropic effects that include reduction of oxidative stress and increased vascular nitric oxide (NO) production. However, whether or not RESV can prevent rises in blood pressure (BP) is controversial and remains to be firmly established. While direct replications such as the “Many Labs” project are extremely valuable in testing the reliability of published findings across laboratories, they reflect the common reliance in psychology on single vignettes or stimuli, which limits the scope of the conclusions that can be reached. New experimental tools and statistical techniques make it easier to routinely sample stimuli, and to appropriately treat them as random factors. We encourage researchers to get into the habit of including multiple ...

The American Indian occupation of Alcatraz Island was the catalyst for a more generalized movement in which Native Americans from across the country have sought redress of grievances, attempting to right the many wrongs committed against them. In this volume, some of the dominant scholars in the field chronicle and analyze Native American activism of the 1960s and 1970s. Much of what is included here began as a special issue of the American Indian Culture and Research Journal; the introduction has ...

Advances in immunosuppressive therapy have allowed for enhanced allograft survival in kidney transplantation. With this increasing success of transplantation, however, has come a greater appreciation of subsequent complications, such as bone and mineral disease. In patients with chronic kidney disease who are awaiting transplantation, disorders in mineral metabolism and renal osteodystrophy are an essentially universal finding, and several different pathophysiologic mechanisms are believed to contribute ...

Ca2+ store depletion activates both Ca2+ selective and non-selective currents in endothelial cells. Recently, considerable progress has been made in understanding the molecular make-up and regulation of an endothelial cell thapsigargin-activated Ca2+ selective current, ISOC. Indeed, ISOC is a relatively small inward Ca2+ current that exhibits an approximate +40 mV reversal potential and is strongly inwardly rectifying. This current is sensitive to organization of the actin-based cytoskeleton. Transient ...
