More than 60 per cent of them reported improvement in exercise‐related pain by week 4, and there was no significant difference between treatment groups. The patients' and the physicians' evaluations ...

This study sets out to identify novel susceptibility genes for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) in a powerful set of samples from the UK and USA (1808 LOAD cases and 2062 controls). Allele frequencies of 17 343 gene-based putative functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were tested for association with LOAD in a discovery case-control sample from the UK. A tiered strategy was used to follow-up significant variants from the discovery sample in four independent sample sets. Here, we report ...

Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) have been implicated in the aetiology of several cancers. To better understand whether anthropometric, behavioural and sociodemographic factors may play a role in cancer risk via IGF signalling, we examined the cross-sectional associations of these exposures with circulating concentrations of IGFs (IGF-I and IGF-II) and IGFBPs (IGFBP-1, IGFBP-2 and IGFBP-3). Simple and sensitive methods to directly detect the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are needed for routine use in the clinical laboratory. In this study, we compared DNA probes prepared by: (1) nick translation with biotinylated dATP; (2) direct covalent biotinylation with photobiotin; (3) direct covalent reaction with 2-acetylaminofluorene (AAF); and (4) a standard radioactive (32P) nick translation procedure. These four DNA probes were hybridized with dilutions of purified target HIV DNA blotted onto ...

Genetic factors play an important role in the etiology of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). We tested gene-centric single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on chromosome 9 and identified two SNPs in the death-associated protein kinase, DAPK1, that show significant association with LOAD. SNP rs4878104 was significantly associated with LOAD in our discovery case–control sample set (WU) and replicated in each of two initial validation case–control sample sets (P<0.05, UK1, SD). Strong evidence of linkage to late-onset Alzheimer disease (LOAD) has been observed on chromosome 10, which implicates a wide region and at least one disease-susceptibility locus. Although significant associations with several biological candidate genes on chromosome 10 have been reported, these findings have not been consistently replicated, and they remain controversial. We performed a chromosome 10-specific association study with 1,412 gene-based single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), to identify ...

The free plasma 17-OHCS response to preoperative intravenous ACTH and to surgical operation was measured in 6 patients who had been receiving prolonged corticosteroid therapy; in 4, the plasma 17-OHCS conjugate levels were also determined. The plasma 17-OHCS response to preoperative ACTH was diminished in all 6 patients, but in 2 of them the free plasma 17-OHCS levels noted postoperatively were within the normal range expected following surgery. In contrast to the foregoing group were 2 patients ...

Abstract Background Increased awareness of leiomyosarcoma (LMS) risk during myomectomy or hysterectomy is essential. Objective and correct reasoning should prevail on any decision regarding the extent and type of surgery to employ. The anticipated risk of a sarcoma after myoma or uterus morcellation is low, and the frequency of leiomyosarcoma especially in women below the age of 40 is very rare. The prevalence data has a wide range and is therefore not reliable. The European Society of Gynaecological ...
