Ivan Crozier,

WHEN WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE penned the lines in Twelfth Night, "If this were play'd upon a stage now, I could condemn it as an improbable fiction" (3.4.127-28), he very aptly described the drama, intrigue, and machinations that would characterize the World League for Sexual Reform congress that met in London in 1929. This essay describes that encounter: one of the key meetings during the interwar years between the English medical profession and radical social and sexual reformers. The World League for ...

Abstract We report on the analysis of 34 years of photometric observations of the pulsating helium atmosphere white dwarf GD358. The complete data set includes archival data from 1982 to 2006, and 1195.2 hr of new observations from 2007 to 2016. From this data set, we extract 15 frequencies representing g-mode pulsation modes, adding 4 modes to the 11 modes known previously. We present evidence that these 15 modes are ℓ = 1 modes, 13 of which belong to a consecutive sequence in radial overtone k . We ...

Various transgenic mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been developed that overexpress mutant forms of amyloid precursor protein in an effort to elucidate more fully the potential role of beta-amyloid (A beta) in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. The present study represents the first complete 3D reconstruction of A beta in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex of PDAPP transgenic mice. A beta deposits were detected by immunostaining and thioflavin fluorescence, and quantified by using ...

Increasing evidence from mouse models of Alzheimer's disease shows that overexpression of a mutant form of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and its product, β-amyloid peptide, initiate pathological changes before amyloid deposition. To evaluate the cytological basis for one of these early changes, namely reduced volume of the dentate gyrus (DG), we have used high-throughput diOlistic cell loading and 3D neuronal reconstruction to investigate potential dendritic pathology of granule cells (GCs) in ...

Keh‐Ming Lin, Dora Anderson, Russell E. Poland,

Clinical observations and survey findings during the past four decades have repeatedly suggested the existence of dramatic cross-ethnic and cross-national differences in the dose requirement and side-effect profiles of various psychotropic and nonpsycho tropic medications. All major classes of psychotropic medications as well as a variety of other pharmacologic agents have been observed to have differential effects in different ethnic groups. Mechanisms responsible for these ethnic differences include ...

Although their relative importance and interaction are unclear, donor antigen(Ag)*-specific hyporeactivity and allogeneic microchimerism have been associated with improved long-term graft outcome and a lower incidence of chronic rejection in solid organ transplant recipients. We have postulated that a critical level of donor antigen, for a critical time period, is necessary to develop and maintain donor antigen-specific hyporeactivity; both the level and the time may differ by organ transplanted. ...

This special section builds on previous scholarship on geographies of ageing, and on relational and transnational approaches to age and migration, to assert the significance of the ageing–migration nexus in human geography. Our primary goal is to examine the intricate relationships between ageing, migration, space and place. By bringing empirical research on ageing and migration into dialogue with existing conceptual work within Geography, we also aim to critically contribute to current debates ...
