Background. The first double-J (DJ) stents were manufactured in 1978. Their J-shaped tips efficiently prevent their migration from kidneys and from the urinary bladder. Nowadays, DJ stents are in common use because they provide efficient and relatively safe urinary derivation between the kidney and the urinary bladder. We report this case with the aim to point out possible serious complications with long-term indwelling stents. Case report. The patient was admitted to hospital five years after the ...

Geometrically accurate and anatomically correct threedimensional geometric models of human bones or bone sections are essential for successful pre-operative planning in orthopedic surgery. For such purposes, 3D polygonal models of bones are usually created based on Computer Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data. In cases where there is no CT or MRI scan, or part of bone is missing, such three-dimensional polygonal models are difficult to create. In these situations predictive bone ...

A two-dimensional numerical study on the laminar flow past a circular cylinder rotating with a constant angular velocity was carried out. The objectives were to obtain a consistent set of data for the drag and lift coefficients for a wide range of rotation rates not available in the literature and a deeper insight into the flow field and vortex development behind the cylinder. First, a wide range of Reynolds numbers (0.01⩽Re⩽45) and rotation rates (0⩽α⩽6) were considered for the steady flow regime, ...

A graphene sheet is well known to be highly stable against chemisorption of a single hydrogen atom, since a puckered ${\mathrm{sp}}^{3}$ hybridized site heavily distorts the surrounding ${\mathrm{sp}}^{2}$ framework. However, successive adjacent chemisorbed hydrogen atoms can engage in a collective stabilization mediated by cooperative alternate puckering in the underlying carbon sheet. After several chemisorbed atoms, the binding energy for further adsorption changes sign and becomes favorable. This ...

To examine in detail the behavior of a new vortex shedding mode found in a previous investigation [Phys. Fluids 14, 3160 (2002)], a two-dimensional numerical study on the laminar incompressible flow past a rotating circular cylinder in the Reynolds number range 60⩽Re⩽200 and at rotational rates 0⩽α⩽6 was carried out. The results obtained clearly confirm the existence of the second shedding mode for the entire Reynolds number range investigated. A complete bifurcation diagram α(Re) was compiled defining ...

Conversion of two diametrically opposed atomic rows on a carbon nanotube to $s{p}^{3}$ hybridization produces two identical weakly coupled one-dimensional electronic systems within a single robust covalently bonded package: a biribbon. Arm-chair tubes, when so divided, acquire a pair of narrow spin-polarized bands at the Fermi energy; interaction across the $s{p}^{3}$ dividers produces a tunable band splitting in the THz range. For semiconducting tubes, the eigenvalues of the low-energy electronic ...

Pin fin arrays are frequently used for cooling of high thermal loaded electronic components. Whereas the pin fin accomplishment regarding heat transfer is always higher than that of other fin configurations, the high pressure drop accompanying pins seriously reduces their overall performance. In order to check how the form of pin cross-section influences the pressure drop and heat transfer capabilities, six forms of pin cross-section were numerically investigated. By employing the conjugate heat ...

We describe how sp(2) carbon, threefold coordinated by other carbons, can be replaced by sp(3) carbon, also threefold carbon coordinated, to produce extremely small-diameter ( approximately 0.4 nm) carbon nanowires with only minimal bond-angle distortion. Under a naming convention analogous to that for ordinary carbon nanotubes, the smallest sp(3) tubes have wrapping indices (3,0) and (2,2). These systems have large band gaps and a stiffness larger even than that of traditional sp(2)-bonded carbon nanotubes. ...

Abstract A novel hexagonal coil design for simultaneous imaging of multiple small animals is presented. The design is based on a coaxial cavity and utilizes the magnetic field formed between two coaxial conductors with hexagonal cross‐sections. An analytical solution describing the B 1 field between conductors of the hexagonal coil was found from the Biot‐Savart law. Both experimental results and analytical calculations showed a variation in the B 1 field within the imaging region of less than 10%. ...

A considerable amount of data supports a 1.8-7.4-fold increased mortality associated with Cushing's syndrome (CS). This is attributed to a high occurrence of several cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in CS [e.g. adiposity, arterial hypertension (AHT), dyslipidaemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)]. Therefore, practically all patients with CS have the metabolic syndrome (MetS), which represents a high CVD risk. Characteristically, despite a relatively young average age, numerous patients with ...

Several molecules are known to contain stable silicon double or triple bonds that are sterically protected by bulky side groups. Through first-principles computation, we demonstrate that well-defined π bonds can also be stabilized in a prototypical crystalline Si structure: Schwarzite Si-168, when modest negative pressures are applied to a nanoscale porous framework. The sp2-bonded Si-168 is thermodynamically preferred over diamond silicon at a negative pressure of −2.5 GPa. Ab-initio molecular dynamics ...
