Jameel J. Khan, Jean M. L. Richardson, Glenn J. Tattersall,
Ectothermic vertebrates, such as reptiles, thermoregulate behaviorally by choosing from available temperatures in their environment. As neonates, bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) are often observed to aggregate in vertical strata. A proximate mechanism for this behavior is the thermal advantage of heat storage (i.e., grouped lizards benefit through a decreased surface area to volume ratio), although competition for limited thermal resources, or aggregation for social reasons are alternative explanations. ...

An experimental Lead Lithium (PbLi) loop named DRAGON-V has been built at the Institute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (INEST, CAS). The purpose of this loop is to test the technical issues of PbLi blankets for fusion reactors, such as thermal hydraulics, material corrosion, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) effect and safety issues, etc. The main heat recovery system of the DRAGON-V loop is the Concentric Recuperator Heat Exchanger (CRHE) which was made of T91 steel. Deep understanding of tooth regeneration is hampered by the lack of lifelong replacing oral dentition in most conventional models. Here, we show that the bearded dragon, one of the rare vertebrate species with both polyphyodont and monophyodont teeth, constitutes a key model for filling this gap, allowing direct comparison of extreme dentition types. Our developmental and high-throughput transcriptomic data of microdissected dental cells unveils the critical importance of successional dental lamina ...

The quality of three dragon fruit clones ( Hylocereus spp.) was determined after x-ray irradiation for disinfestation of quarantine pests. Fruit were treated with irradiation doses of 0, 200, 400, 600, or 800 Gy and stored for 12 days at 10 °C. Irradiation did not affect soluble solids content, titratable acidity, or fructose concentrations. Glucose, sucrose, and total sugar concentrations decreased linearly as dose increased. Minimal softening occurred in the outer flesh layers for fruit treated with ...

The SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN (SBP) gene family is essential for plant growth and development. However, little is known about the SBP gene family in pitaya (Selenicereus undatus L.); a fruit crop cultivated in tropical climates, severely affected by abiotic stress factors. These stresses produce excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), affecting pitaya growth and development. In this study, we identified 17 SBP genes in the pitaya genome (HuSBP) and classified them into seven distinct clusters ...

Dracaena (Asparagaceae family) tree is famous for producing "dragon blood"-a bioactive red-colored resin. Despite its long history of use in traditional medicine, little knowledge exists on the genomic architecture, phylogenetic position, or evolution. Hence, in this study, we sequenced the whole chloroplast (cp) genomes of D. serrulata and D. cinnabari and performed comparative genomics of nine genomes of the genus Dracaena. The results showed that the genome sizes range from 155,055 (D. elliptica) ...

Dragon fruit (pitaya) is an important tropical crop with medicinal and industrial values. However, severe environmental stress factors affect dragon fruit production and development. The MADS-box gene family performs an essential role in the regulation of stress tolerance, reproduction, and fruit ripening in various plants, but relevant studies havn't been conducted on dragon fruit. In this study, the identification and expression analysis of the MADS-box gene family was conducted in response to ...
