We measured the flow-resistance of five commercially available 10 cm H2O expiratory positive-pressure (EPP) valves (n = five per valve type) at bias flows of between 0 and 2,000 ml/s. We found that individual valves of each type and manufacturer functioned similarly. Results indicate that celebrities are significantly more narcissistic than MBA students and the general population. An analytic model of the deuteron absorption function has been developed and is compared to experimental NMR signals of deuterated butanol obtained at the SMC experiment in order to determine the deuteron polarization. The absorption function model includes dipolar broadening and a frequency-dependent treatment of the intensity factors. We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g1d of the deuteron from deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarized muons on polarized deuterons. The results are combined with our previous measurements of g1d. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to compute g1d(x) at a constant Q2. At Q2 = 10 GeV2, we obtain a first moment Γ1d=∫1dg1ddx=0.041±0.008, a flavour-singlet axial charge of the nucleon a0 = 0.30 ± 0.08, and an axial charge of the strange quark ...

We have measured the spin-dependent structure function g1p in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range 0.003<x<0.7 and 1GeV2<Q2<60GeV2. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is used to evolve the measured g1p(x,Q2) to a fixed Q02. The first moment of g1p at Q02=10GeV2 is Γ1p=0.136±0.013 (stat) ±0.009 (syst) ±0.005 (evol). The polarized target of the Spin Muon Collaboration at CERN was used for deep inelastic muon scattering experiments during 1993–1996 with a polarized muon beam to investigate the spin structure of the nucleon. Most of the experiments were carried out with longitudinal target polarization and 190 GeV muons, and some were done with transverse polarization and 100 GeV muons. A muon beam polarimeter has been built for the SMC experiment at the CERN SPS, for muon energies of 100 to 200 GeV. The beam polarisation is determined from the energy spectrum of positrons from the decay μ+ → e+ νcνμ. A polarisation of − 0.82 is measured with a relative systematic accuracy of 3%.

We have measured the spin-dependent structure function $g_1^p$ of the proton in deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range $0.003<x<0.7$ and $1\,\mbox{GeV}^2<Q^2<60\,\mbox{GeV}^2$. Its first moment, $\int_0^1 g_1^p(x) dx $, is found to be $0.136 \pm 0.011\,(\mbox{stat.})\pm 0.011\,(\mbox{syst.})$ at $Q^2=10\,\mbox{GeV}^2$. This value is smaller than the prediction of the Ellis--Jaffe sum rule by two standard deviations, and is consistent with previous measurements. ...

We measured the spin asymmetry in the scattering of 100 GeV longitudinally-polarized muons on transversely polarized protons. The asymmetry was found to be compatible with zero in the kinematic range 0.006 < x < 0.6, 1 < Q2 < 30GeV2. From this result we derive the upper limits for the virtual photon-proton asymmetry A2, and for the spin structure function g2. For x < 0.15, A2 is significantly smaller than its positivity limit √R.

We present the first results of the combined measurements of the EAS-TOP (at the surface) and LVD (deep underground) detectors operating as a combined telescope in the study of UHE cosmic rays and their interactions. Examples of different classes of events and their significance in different high-energy and astrophysical studies are discussed.

Abstract This is a progress report on the multiple muon events recorded by the first tower of the LVD detector at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. About 17,000 multiple muon events have been observed since the LVD first tower started operation in June 1992. Presented here are the measured multiplicity distribution and separation distribution of muon pairs in the bundles.
