In the Fourhal foreland basin, in the north-eastern part of the Marrocan Central Meseta, mafic series are represented by basalts interbedded with Early Namurian turbidites and by numerous mafic sills, including the Marziqallal sill detailed here. The study of the trace element compositions of the clinopyroxenes, a ubiquitous mineral in the gabbroic sill and basalts, indicate that these two formations are derived from a similar parental magma. This magma evolved following a general fractional crystallization ...

Abstract Supplementation with silicate microparticles was used as novel approach to control the morphological development of Aspergillus niger , important as the major world source of citric acid and higher‐value enzymes, in submerged culture. With careful variation of size and concentration of the micromaterial added, a number of distinct morphological forms including pellets of different size, free dispersed mycelium, and short hyphae fragments could be reproducibly created. Aluminum oxide particles ...

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare but particularly aggressive form of primary breast cancer. In contrast to noninflammatory breast cancer (non IBC), the molecular alterations underlying IBC are poorly known. We postulated that the kind and frequency of these alterations might differ between IBC and non IBC and account for its particular aggressiveness. We investigated allelic losses associated with primary breast cancer (on chromosome arms 1p, 3p, 6p, 6q, 7q, 8p, 9p, 11p, 11q, 16q, 17p and ...

Basaltic magmatism occurs in the Hercynian foreland basin of the Western Moroccan Meseta as pillow lavas flows interbedded with “flysch” deposits and sills of dolerite and gabbro. A sedimentological and tectonic study shows that the deposition of the flysch, and thus the intrusion of the lava flows and sills, was controlled by the northwestward propagation of thrust‐related folds in the wedge‐top depozone of a syncontractional foreland basin system. The pillow lavas appear as either massive sheets ...

Abstract The ErbB‐driven autocrine growth pathway has been implicated in the development and progression of most common human epithelial malignancies; its blockade is therefore a promising therapeutic strategy, and several candidate drugs are currently undergoing clinical trials. Paradoxically, little is known of the expression pattern of these 4 genes in human tumors, and the clinical significance of the 2 most recently discovered ERBB genes, ERBB3 and ERBB4 , is unclear. We used a real‐time quantitative ...

Maspin, a member of the serpin family, has a role in cell migration, angiogenesis and apoptosis. Little is known of the clinical significance of maspin gene expression in human cancers. We developed a real-time quantitative RT–PCR assay to quantify the full range of maspin mRNA copy numbers in a series of 10 ERα-positive and 10 ERα-negative breast tumours. We observed a statistical link between low maspin mRNA levels and positive oestrogen status (P=0.0012). In consequence, to better assess the prognostic ...

Amorphous Co1−xErx ribbons with x=55 and 65 were prepared by the melt-spinning technique. Magnetization measurements were carried out in the temperature range 4–100 K under high magnetic fields up to 20 T. Even at 20 T the saturation is not fully attained. Assuming that Co has no moment in the alloy with x=65 the Er moment is found to be 7.0μB which indicates a speromagnetic spin structure. The Co moment in the alloy with x=55 is then found to be 0.1μB, which is negligibly small. By analyzing the ...

Abstract The lungs are a frequent target of metastatic breast cancer cells, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are unclear. All existing data were obtained either using statistical association between gene expression measurements found in primary tumors and clinical outcome, or using experimentally derived signatures from mouse tumor models. Here, we describe a distinct approach that consists of using tissue surgically resected from lung metastatic lesions and comparing their gene expression ...

Alternative promoters (AP) occur in >30% protein-coding genes and contribute to proteome diversity. However, large-scale analyses of AP regulation are lacking, and little is known about their potential physiopathologic significance. To better understand the transcriptomic effect of estrogens, which play a major role in breast cancer, we analyzed gene and AP regulation by estradiol in MCF7 cells using pan-genomic exon arrays. We thereby identified novel estrogen-regulated genes (ERG) and determined ...

It was shown recently on the level of gene expression that UGT8, coding UDP-galactose:ceramide galactosyltransferase, is one of six genes whose elevated expression correlated with a significantly increased the risk of lung metastases in breast cancer patients. Because of their metabolic diversity, high production capacity, secretion efficiency, and capability of carrying out posttranslational modifications, filamentous fungi are widely exploited as efficient cell factories in the production of metabolites, bioactive substances, and native or heterologous proteins, respectively. There is, however, a complex relationship between the morphology of these microorganisms, transport phenomena, the viscosity of the cultivation broth, and related productivity. ...

In the field of bioinformatics, exon profiling is a developing area of disease-associated transcriptome analysis. In this study, we performed a microarray-based transcriptome analysis at the single exon level in mouse 4T1 primary mammary tumors with different metastatic capabilities. A novel bioinformatics platform was developed that identified 679 genes with differentially expressed exons in 4T1 tumors, many of which were involved in cell morphology and movement. Of 152 alternative exons tested ...

Abstract Bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) counteracts the physiological epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process that is indicative of epithelial plasticity. Because EMT is involved in cancer, we investigated whether BMP7 plays a role in breast cancer growth and metastasis. In this study, we show that decreased BMP7 expression in primary breast cancer is significantly associated with the formation of clinically overt bone metastases in patients with ≥10 years of follow-up. In line with ...
