Large transboundary Upper Miocene geothermal sandy aquifers which are widely utilized by both countries for balneological and direct heat purposes exist in the Slovenian-Hungarian border region. In NE Slovenia the total direct heat use was 382 TJ in 2010, while in SW Hungary it was 648 TJ, including utilization from basement reservoirs. The total installed capacity of the 13 Slovenian users was 38.8 MWt, while that of the 29 Hungarian users was 70.6 MWt. Utilisation takes place without harmonized ...

The fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) has been repeatedly noted to occur in natural and artificial subterranean systems. Despite the obvious connection of this species with underground shelters, their level of dependence and importance to the species is still not fully understood. In this study, we carried out long-term monitoring based on the capture-mark-recapture method in two wintering populations aggregated in extensive underground habitats. Using the POPAN model we found the population ...

The chemical composition of dissolved organic sulfur in snow is important in understanding the sources and scavenging processes of atmospheric organic matter. Snow samples collected simultaneously from four megacities in North China were analyzed using ultra-high-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The modified oxygen and redefined aromaticity index help in the interpretation of the possible structural information and evaluation of the aromaticity of sulfur-containing ...

Laser desorption/ionization (LDI) was investigated as an ionization method for Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) studies of natural organic matter (NOM). Using International Humic Substances Society standards, Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM), LDI was found to ionize a very similar set of compounds (>90% of molecular formulas identity) to the matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), while producing higher ...

A simple and robust solvent suppression technique that enables acquisition of high‐quality 1D 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of alcoholic beverages on cryoprobe instruments was developed and applied to acquire NMR spectra of Scotch Whisky. The method uses 3 channels to suppress signals of water and ethanol, including those of 13 C satellites of ethanol. It is executed in automation allowing high throughput investigations of alcoholic beverages. On the basis of the well‐established 1D ...

We report a new pure-shift method, termed SHARPER (Sensitive, Homogeneous, And Resolved PEaks in Real time) designed for the analysis of reactions and equilibria by NMR. By focusing on a single selected signal, SHARPER removes all heteronuclear couplings of a selected nucleus without the need to pulse on X channels, thus overcoming hardware limitations of conventional spectrometers. A more versatile decoupling scheme, termed sel-SHARPER, removes all heteronuclear and homonuclear couplings of the ...

Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS) is widely used to characterize the chemical complexity of mixtures, such as natural organic matter (NOM), petroleum, and agri-food products (including Scotch whisky). Although electrospray ionization (ESI) is by far the most widely used ionization source in these studies, other ionization techniques are available and may offer complementary information. In a recent study, we found matrix free laser desorption/ionization (LDI) to be effective for the analysis ...

Scotch Whisky has been analysed as a complex mixture in its raw form using high resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and previously developed water and ethanol suppression techniques. This has allowed for the positive identification of 25 compounds in Scotch Whisky by means of comparison to reference standards, spike-in experiments, and advanced 1D and 2D NMR experiments. Quantification of compounds was hindered by signal overlap, though peak alignment strategies were largely successful. Statistical ...

Whisky is a complex mixture made up of thousands of compounds originating in different stages of its production. Analysis of whisky congeners is critical to our understanding of the manufacturing process, quality control, and the detection of counterfeit products. The current chromatographic methods have a long analysis time, can require milliliters of sample and may not detect all required compounds in a single analysis. We have demonstrated that the majority of the whisky congeners of interest ...

We present a signal enhancement strategy for benchtop NMR that produces SNR increases on the order of 10 to 30 fold by collapsing the target resonance into an extremely narrow singlet. Importantly, the resultant signal is amenable to quantitative interpretation and therefore can be applied to analytical applications such as reaction monitoring.

Scotch Whisky is a culturally significant high value commodity. To gain a better understanding of the production processes and whisky maturation chemistry as well as addressing authenticity concerns, advances in chemical analysis of whisky are required. NMR spectroscopy represents a means to detect, identify, and quantify all major components of whisky by a single technique. It is an untargeted technique allowing for simultaneous profiling of different compound classes, albeit with a limited dynamic ...
