The dynamics of vibrationally and rotationally excited planar OCS is analyzed within the framework of nonlinear classical mechanics. Results include critical energies for the onset of irregularity, an analysis of energy relaxation from excited zeroth order modes relative to the K-entropy prediction, and aspects of the OCS mechanical spectra. In addition, results relevant to the possibility of OCS multiphoton dissociation are presented, such as the range of energies over which the system is classically ...

Duane E. Carter,

Statistical theories of unimolecular reactions are applied to determine the translational energies of fragments of ionic decomposition. The results are found to be in conflict with experimental measurements of translational energies of ions formed by electron or photon impact. However, a full application of phase-space theory results in much better agreement with ion–molecule experiments than the theory of Safron et al. [S. A. Safron, N. D. Weinstein, D. R. Abstract Patterns of cellular adhesion were created on a surface using novel photochemistry that is stimulated with visible light. A glass surface coated with polyethylene glycol is nonadhesive to a variety of adherent mammalian cell types. Treatment of that surface with a mixture of tris(bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) chloride, ammonium persulfate, and a tryptophan derivative or tryptophan‐bearing peptide in conjunction with irradiation with visible light (447 nm) made the surface adhesive to several cell ...

espite much hype and promise, satellite remote sensing is rarely used in day-to-day forest resource management, largely because of the coarse resolution of the last generation of spaceborne sensors. The multispectral scanner (MSS) onboard the first earth resources technology satellite (ERTS-1, later dubbed Landsat-1) had a resolution (pixel size) of 79 by 79 meters and could sense only in the blue, green, red, and near-infrared bands. That was in 1972.Ten years later, the thematic mapper (TM) on Landsat- ...

Over a six-year period, between 1984 and 1990, 622 patients with basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma of the eyelids were examined at our institution. Thirteen patients had orbital invasion at initial examination. The average age of patients at orbital invasion was 75.8 years. Ten patients were men, eight of whom had basal cell carcinoma and two of whom had squamous cell carcinoma. Most patients had an orbital mass and incomitant strabismus at initial examination. Invasive basal cell carcinoma ...

In order to avoid mutual electronic interference between GEO satellites, the international regulatory bodies have allocated them to ‘slots’ separated by roughly 2 degrees in longitude. By contrast, no such standardization yet exists for the newer non-geostationary (NGSO) constellations. As a consequence, the widely differing periods, inclinations, and phasing for such disparate NGSO systems creates the prospect of hundreds, if not thousands, of electronic interferences per day. This paper describes ...

A common method for generating mice with subtle genetic manipulations uses homologous recombination (HR) in embryonic stem (ES) cells to replace a wild-type gene with a slightly modified one. Generally, a drug resistance gene is inserted with the modified gene to select correctly targeted clones. Often, however, the presence of this drug resistance gene interferes with the normal locus and creates a null or hypomorphic allele. Flanking of the selectable marker by loxP sites followed by Cre-mediated ...

Following the initial successful lung transplants reported by the Toronto Lung Transplant Group in 1986, lung transplantation has evolved into an effective treatment of isolated pulmonary failure and has been performed in more than 20,000 recipients. Increased experience, adjustments, and additions to the surgical technique and improved perioperative care have combined to decrease morbidity and improve survival in lung transplant recipients. An area in which improvements have been made but that ...

The ability of a Bayesian regression program (Warfcalc) to predict warfarin response was evaluated retrospectively in 48 inpatients and prospectively in 10 inpatients. The prothrombin ratio (PR) on the last day of inpatient therapy was predicted using zero (naive) to five sequential, daily PR feedbacks. Bias and precision were measured using mean error (ME) and mean absolute error (MAE), respectively. Root mean squared error (RMSE) was used as a combined measure of bias and precision. In the retrospective ...

Purpose: To determine if the surgical defect after excision of periocular skin cancers can be predicted preoperatively. Methods: Review of medical records of patients who underwent excision of periocular skin cancers between 1990 and 1995. Results: Two hundred sixty-four patients (157 men, 107 women) with a total of 281 malignant tumors were treated. Basal cell carcinoma accounted for 92.2% of the tumors, whereas squamous cell carcinoma constituted 6.4% of lesions. The lower eyelid and medial canthus ...

Toxigenic Clostridium sordellii strains are increasingly recognized to cause highly lethal infections in humans that are typified by a toxic shock syndrome (TSS). Two glucosylating toxins, lethal toxin (TcsL) and hemorrhagic toxin (TcsH) are believed to be important in the pathogenesis of TSS. While non-toxigenic strains of C. sordellii demonstrate reduced cytotoxicity in vitro and lower virulence in animal models of infection, there are few data regarding their behavior in humans. Here we report a ...

Conversely, SalmoFresh™ was unable to reduce surface contamination with a Salmonella Paratyphi B strain that was not susceptible to the phage cocktail in the spot-test assay. However, by replacing two SalmoFresh™ component ...

Intra-tumor heterogeneity stems from genetic, epigenetic, functional, and environmental differences among tumor cells. A major source of genetic heterogeneity comes from DNA sequence differences and/or whole chromosome and focal copy number variations (CNVs). Whole chromosome CNVs are caused by chromosomal instability (CIN) that is defined by a persistently high rate of chromosome mis-segregation. Accordingly, CIN causes constantly changing karyotypes that result in extensive cell-to-cell genetic ...

Ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by normal brain development followed by progressive neurodegeneration. The gene mutated in A-T (ATM) is a serine protein kinase implicated in cell cycle regulation and DNA repair. The role of ATM in the brain and the consequences of its loss on neuronal survival remain unclear. We studied the role of ATM in adult neural progenitor cells in vivo and in vitro to define the role of ATM in dividing and postmitotic neural cells ...

The concept of ‘successful aging’ has long intrigued the scientific community. Despite this long-standing interest, a consensus definition has proven to be a difficult task, due to the inherent challenge involved in defining such a complex, multi-dimensional phenomenon. The lack of a clear set of defining characteristics for the construct of successful aging has made comparison of findings across studies difficult and has limited advances in aging research. A consensus on markers of successful aging ...

Background: Splenic artery angioembolization (SAE) is increasingly being used as an adjunct to nonoperative management for stable patients with blunt splenic injury (BSI). However, little is known about splenic immunocompetence after SAE. This study aims at assessing splenic immunocompetence after SAE for BSI. Methods: Peripheral blood was obtained from BSI patients (n = 8) who had SAE >6 months prior. Splenic immunocompetence was assessed by isolating mononuclear cells and incubating with CD4+ and CD45RA+ ...
