An acoustic technique was applied to investigate the binary critical behavior of the system CO2 + Xe. The critical line of this binary system exhibits a temperature minimum, suggesting the existence of azeotropic behavior. The compositions of the studied mixtures were chosen in order to define the minimum temperature locus (p = 6.04 MPa, T = 282.34 K and at x(CO2) = 0.3622). The results were correlated with the Peng−Robinson equation of state using conventional mixing and combining rules. Additionally, the ...

A simple mathematical model, based on polynomial functions, was used to correlate experimental vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for the CO2 + ethanol + water system. The data were collected from the literature for temperatures 35, 40, 50, 60, and 70°C and pressures from 10 MPa to 18.5 MPa. This model is able to reproduce the equilibrium compositions of the two phases within the experimental error given in the group of selected publications.

Obesity is a disease characterized by an excessive accumulation of body fat, which is harmful to health, and it has grown significantly in the past years in the majority of countries. The surgery should be recommended to those patients with obesity who did not succeed in conservative clinical therapy after a rigorous analysis by a multidisciplinary team. The aim of this study was to compare metabolic results, weight loss, and parameters associated with obesity in the preoperative and postoperative ...

Parotoid glands of amphibians are known for the production of several biologically active compounds having pharmacological and toxic effects in mammals. In the present work, a protein fraction obtained from Rhinella schneideri parotoid gland (RsPP) was characterized to study its biological and toxic effects. Rhinella schneideri parotoid secretion is composed of up to 30% (w/w) of soluble proteins. Tandem mass spectrometric analysis of the RsPP identified 104 proteins, including actin, beta-actin, ...

Our objective was to evaluate the role of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) activation in the gastroprotective effect of the HO-1/CO pathway against alendronate-induced gastric damage in rats. Rats were pretreated, once daily for 4 days, with saline, hemin (HO-1 inducer), or dimanganese decacarbonyl (DMDC, CO donor). Another group received zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP IX, HO-1 antagonist) 1 h before hemin treatment or sGC inhibitor (ODQ) 30 min before hemin and DMDC treatment. After 30 min, gastric damage ...

This study investigates the effects of software piracy on economic growth around the world for the years 2000 to 2014, using panel data structure with fixed effects to capture this relationship, plus year dummies. Our findings suggest, in general, that software piracy has a negative impact on growth and that this relationship seems to be non-linear.

In this study, quantum-mechanical calculations in the framework of the Density Functional Theory (DFT) were performed to investigate the role of exchange-correlation functional in describing structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of ZnFe2O4. Herein B3LYP, PBE0, B1WC, and WC1LYP functionals implemented in the CRYSTAL17 code were considered due to the different amounts of the exact Hartree-Fock exchange fraction. In particular, the role of HF fraction on ZnFe2O4 properties was addressed for ...

Quantifying the spatio-temporal distribution of arthropods in tropical rainforests represents a first step towards scrutinizing the global distribution of biodiversity on Earth. To date most studies have focused on narrow taxonomic groups or lack a design that allows partitioning of the components of diversity. Here, we consider an exceptionally large dataset (113,952 individuals representing 5,858 species), obtained from the San Lorenzo forest in Panama, where the phylogenetic breadth of arthropod ...

A case of a bite inflicted by Oxybelis fulgidus in the wilds of Amazon is reported. The patient was a 67-year-old man who presented with dizziness, tachycardia and local pain, with erythema and bleeding in his left arm. The venom of Oxybelis fulgidus, a neotropical rear-fanged snake, contains one of the four three-finger toxins already isolated from colubrid snakes, called fulgimotoxin. He was treated with oral analgesics and returned to the ambulatory in 48 hours, with good evolution. We report ...

Assessing Creepy Crawlies Arthropods are the most diverse group of terrestrial animal species, yet estimates of the total number of arthropod species have varied widely, especially for tropical forests. Basset et al. (p. 1481 , see the cover) now provide more reliable estimates of total arthropod species richness in a tropical rainforest in Panama. Intensive sampling of a half hectare of forest yielded just over 6000 arthropod species. Scaling up this result to the whole forest suggests that the total ...
