Background The Brazilian population has a tri-hybrid composition with a high degree of ethnic admixture. We hypothesized that Brazilian individuals with CF from different Brazilian regions have a specific distribution of CFTR variants. Methods Individuals with CF with data available in the Patient Registry and without an established genotype were submitted to CFTR sequencing by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methodology, and results were anonymously incorporated to the Registry Database. Genotyping ...

Quantifying the spatio-temporal distribution of arthropods in tropical rainforests represents a first step towards scrutinizing the global distribution of biodiversity on Earth. To date most studies have focused on narrow taxonomic groups or lack a design that allows partitioning of the components of diversity. Here, we consider an exceptionally large dataset (113,952 individuals representing 5,858 species), obtained from the San Lorenzo forest in Panama, where the phylogenetic breadth of arthropod ...

Assessing Creepy Crawlies Arthropods are the most diverse group of terrestrial animal species, yet estimates of the total number of arthropod species have varied widely, especially for tropical forests. Basset et al. (p. 1481 , see the cover) now provide more reliable estimates of total arthropod species richness in a tropical rainforest in Panama. Intensive sampling of a half hectare of forest yielded just over 6000 arthropod species. Scaling up this result to the whole forest suggests that the total ...

Species of the genus Brachiaria comprise plants with different modes of reproduction, sexual and apomictic. In apomixis, the embryo sac differentiates from an unreduced cell, and the embryo develops in the absence of egg cell fertilisation. In this work, the characterisation and expression analyses of a MADS-box gene from Brachiaria brizantha, named BbrizAGL6, was described in sexual and apomictic plants. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that BbrizAGL6 belongs to the AGL6-like subfamily of proteins ...

We aimed to investigate the effects of maternal protein restriction during mid-gestation on the skeletal muscle composition of the offspring. In the restriction treatment (RES, n = 9), cows were fed a basal diet, while in the control (CON, n = 9) group cows received the same RES diet plus the protein supplement during mid-gestation (100–200d). Samples of Longissimus dorsi muscle were collected from the offspring at 30d and 450d postnatal. Muscle fiber number was found to be decreased as a result of maternal ...

This work aimed at evaluating the potential of using natural deep eutectic systems (NADES) as cryoprotectant agents (CPAs). Several combinations between natural primary metabolites that have been identified in animals that live in extreme cold climates were prepared. All systems showed very little cytoxicity towards L929 cells at concentrations high as 1–2 M. Moreover, this cell line was highly tolerant to 10% (w/v) of NADES when compared to Me2SO. To test NADES as CPAs, two cell lines were used, L929 ...

The chemical nature of solids incorporated into the drilling fluid can be very diverse, since it is related to the type of rock formation. As a result, it can lead to different impacts on the properties of the emulsions, which are the bases for drilling fluids formulation. In view of this, this work aimed to evaluate the influence of the chemical nature of finely divided solids on physical properties and interfacial phenomena of inverse olefin emulsions. For this purpose, emulsions were prepared ...

Abstract Lasiodiplodia theobromae (Botryosphaeriaceae, Ascomycota) is a plant pathogen and human opportunist whose pathogenicity is modulated by temperature. The molecular effects of temperature on L . theobromae are mostly unknown, so we used a multi-omics approach to understand how temperature affects the molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity. The genome of L . theobromae LA-SOL3 was sequenced (Illumina MiSeq) and annotated. Furthermore, the transcriptome (Illumina TruSeq) and proteome (Orbitrap LC-MS/ ...

This study aimed at identifying changes in the clones causing iGAS in Portugal. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing, emm typing and superantigen (SAg) gene profiling were performed for 381 iGAS isolates from 2010–2015. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and atomic-force microscopy (AFM) were used to investigate the size evolution of InAs quantum dots on GaAs(001) as a function of the amount of InAs material. Different families of islands were observed in the AFM images and unambiguously identified in the PL spectra, together with the signal of the wetting layer. PL measurements carried out at low and intermediate temperatures showed a thermal carrier redistribution among dots belonging to different families. The ...

This study aimed to assess the effects of maternal protein supplementation and offspring sex (OS) on the intake parameters of the offspring. Forty-three Tabapuã cows were randomly allocated in the following treatments: protein supplementation (PS) during days 100-200 of gestation (RES, 5.5% total crude protein (CP), n = 2, or CON, 10% total CP, n = 19) and OS (females, n = 20; males, n = 23). The offspring were evaluated during the cow-calf (0-210 days), backgrounding (255-320 days), growing 1 (321-381 days), and ...
